While I generally agree with that statement, I note that DoorDash only allows upfront tipping whereas Uber Eats allows you to tip after you actually received the service and know if it was good or not.

My last DD order from Cheesecake Factory was missing a $10 slice. I texted the driver and asked if he might have forgotten another bag but never got a response. In hindsight I would've not tipped him as much as I did.
Agreed. I'm I heavy tipper in restaurants. I tipped well on a DoorDash and watched the driver on the app pick up my food then head up to a dog park by my house and sit there for 25 minutes. I messaged her and she said the food was delayed yet I saw her sitting at the dog park. Let me tip afterwords so I can tip based on the service I received. I don't tip my server as soon as I place my order in a restaurant…

Like how it's so, so much more effort the delivery guy to deliver 4 burgers vs. 1 burger to the same address, right? Wink
It's not like how wait staff has to deal with the needs of serving 4 people vs. 1 person.

I tip based on distance from the restaurant for delivery, not percentage of my order. The delivery service should be paying them a living wage, my tip should be for excellent service, but unfortunately things don't work that way in the real world, so I usually tip a minimum of $5 per delivery order regardless of the cost of the item.

If the items all fit in one bag and is not super heavy or bulky, I don't tip them any more if its 6 items or one item.
I like the methodology but just curious; when you're eating in a restaurant do you tell the waiter it's the same to carry one vs 4 burgers to the table? laugh out loud

Nope because they are serving 4 different people, with 4 different plates…probably 4 different drinks….requests for 4 different refills, etc.

This i wish. Its not hard to check a bags for complete items. You just count the number of boxes lol. It happens to me as a customer too. I use uber eats because I dont trust DD drivers for this reason even though I was one before.

Sadly the delivery service does not give them a wages. They have a base of $2.50. That disappears for the gas of that delivery. $5.00 flat you said? Ouch! Just to think if that food is delayed and that was the only order for that hour. 5.00 would make me vomit of a low tip for a big order.
A 5$ non mandatory tip would make you vomit? I'd like to see what you do when someone doesn't tip then lol, probably have a stroke. Tip cultural is ridiculous and needs to go away, it shouldn't be any concern of the customer who's already paying for a service how much the restaurant is paying it's employees. Should the restaurant pay more, yes they should. Should I be responsible for paying your salary because your employer doesn't pay enough? No I don't think I should. There's a reason we're literally the only country in the world that tips, in fact in most countries it's actually seen as disrespectful to offer a tip.

I could go on about this for hours, like how barbers charge you 20$ for a haircut and then still expect a tip on top of that, when they are literally just doing what you paid them to do. Even subway and dominos ask for a tip now on the credit card machine, when I'm literally going in to order and pickup my own food, they want a tip for just doing what they are getting paid to do. It's ridiculous.

The whole tipping them because they "only make like 2$ an hour" thing is really just bs, because I guarantee you, if you ask any restaurant server would they rather get 15$ an hour and no tips, or 2$ an hour plus tips, almost all of them would choose the tips. My brother is a waiter at Perkins, and he regularly makes 25-30$ an hour just off of tips. Sure there are bad nights but there's also nights where he makes 250$ in a couple of hours, and we are in the south, in one of the poorer states. Not sure how well the tips are with doordash and Uber, but actual sit down restaurants, servers make a good wage.

When I clicked on the banner it only takes me to places that basically will send through the mail. Am I looking at something wrong or is it because I live in the middle of nowhere?
Should EMTs get tips because most make $13/hr and they…. Save people's lives? Should teachers get tips because they get bad pay for working 80 hour weeks including at home to plan lessons, grade, teach kids things lazy parents won't, and educate the future of the country while paying off massive student loans?

So if you order a bottle of wine that is $1000. from a restaurant server you would tip the same as you were getting a $20. bottle because its "1 bottle". Its the same service, so they should not be given more? You dont know because you have not worked in the business. Believe me your words would change instead of sounding like your entitled. There will always be tightwad tippers I guess.
Why would you have to tip more because you spent more money? If I order a 100$ steak, that's all, the waiter brings me one plate, why should I have to tip more than the guy who spent 60$ but ordered 5-6 cheap items? Seems like he needed more time and attention than me, waiter needs to carry more plates to and from the table, there's also going to be more dishes to clean. The amount of money spent shouldn't affect the amount you tip.

Probably tip them a few bucks more because making sure those drinks don't spill will take more care and effort. Now if it's 4 more orders of French fries for delivery…..not much more of an effort.

The whole debate is really whether or not we should re-think the tipping culture in America. Nobody wants the driver to get paid peanuts; we all think they should get paid. What people differ is who's responsible for paying the drivers. Should it be the employer who hire the employee? Or should it be the consumer?

As someone who has been a long-time user of food delivery services and work sometimes doing delivery work, I would like to add my two cents.

As a customer who doesn't pay a delivery service subscription, the fees these companies charge are ridiculous. Caviar (now owned by DoorDash), for instance, serves higher-end restaurants while charging up to a 15% service and a $5 delivery fees. Your $100 fancy Sunday night dinner is now $140 after fees, taxes, and a $12 tip.

In my area, DoorDash pays drivers typically a $3 base pay plus tips. When someone orders and DOES NOT tip, these "delivery offers" are pushed out to drivers and passed over many times by them. Meanwhile, your food order is sitting out getting cold. DoorDash, GrubHub, and UberEats will raise base pay in $0.25 - $0.50 increments after a specific amount of time and continue to do so to entice drivers to delivery the order. During busy hours of lunch and dinner, they may raise base pay by a few dollars to lure more drivers on the road.

As a delivery driver, I don't care if an order weighs 1 pound or 10 pounds or is in three bags. The only thing that matters to me is my total pay and distance for delivering it. I can weigh every delivery offer pushed out to my phone app within two seconds.

All of these major delivery companies are publicly-traded in the stock market with valuations in the billions. They're all unprofitable on the books due to their massive spending on consumer marketing competing for market share. At their cores, these are data and logistic tech companies which also spend a great deal on research & development on new technologies. It's a highly competive sector. Amazon, not too long ago after acquring Whole Foods, attempted to get into this game but shortly bowed out.

I get it.

Yeah I usually guilt myself into a lil more because I'm somewhat out of the way. Doordash is such a shitty job. laugh out loud
