My apologies, I probably should have added my must purchase exclusives I already have lined up (to add to the backlog of course, like any other SDer)
For non-exclusives, I just started AC Valhalla and am gonna do Immortals Fenyx Rising next. So far AC is a lot of fun.
In the past, year old games would be $15-25 on black Friday but now we are praising $40 prices?

My thoughts are that this game is closer to abstract art than most games or movies. The story is more and more compelling the further you get, and despite the difficulty the game also becomes more accessible the further you go. In terms of gameplay and combat, my best comparison is it's fast like Nier automata with a focus on guns rather than melee.
It does have some Souls/FromSoft story mechanics though and you have to read some in game stuff to get a better grasp of whats going on.
Despite the person above saying otherwise, i do feel like it is a legit GOTY contender. The story is compelling, and combined with sounds via headphones and the controller haptics it feels like an experience more so than most games. I feel like the game does everything it set out to very well and it doesn't try to over achieve by adding in extra fluff.
All that said, Even though i think it's a legit GOTY contender id be surprised if it won because so few people seem to have actually finished it. Im betting it wins best new IP or some smaller category.
The save feature definitely makes it more accessible for more than just the hardcore people.
I haven't started any other games in my backlog, partly because I'm not in the mood to learn any new systems. Returnal I already know the gameplay, and enjoy running through it.
Forget about what people say about the story, however -- it is disjointed, unevenly paced (due to progression), and to finish the final act true ending requires RNG (finding collectibles). I could barely follow it since it's abstract (flickers of memory fragments here and there). Story is important to me, but obviously the narrative takes a backseat here.
For some general tips if you get this game, don't be afraid of bullets -- you must dodge into them, past them. That's where you are usually safe. Unless you are swarmed; then stay behind cover. Be strategic in clearing out enemies. You gotta have good spatial awareness; you'll learn the environment as you play it over.
It's pretty to look at but I just hated it. OTOH I like Hades so maybe just me.
So if you don't mind used, shop around a little and you can score it cheaper.
At least you can save now. I certainly wasn't going to buy it before that came out.
