Actually, Onkyo (along with Pioneer) was formally acquired by VOXX [klipsch.com] through their Premium Audio Company two months ago. PAC also owns Klipsch, Jamo, Mirage, Teac, and a few other well known brands, so I think Onkyo is in safe hands now. The manufacturing will be done by Sharp going forward.

With regards to Onkyo (as well as Pioneer) receivers - they have a lively, vibrant sound that many audiophiles prefer over clinical and dry (typical modern Denon or Marantz for example). I have personal experience with all of these brands and have no hesitation recommending Onkyo. Yes, their higher-end models with Dirac room optimization (NR7100 and NZ50) are superior to NR6100/6050, but they are also over $1100 MSRP and not available anywhere currently. For an average home theater NR6050 is more than capable and a great deal at $499. Also, unlike MY2020 Denons, Yamahas and Marantz units, this receiver has fully functional HDMI 2.1 ports and should be compatible with PS5 and XBOX-X running 8K HDR - out of the box.

THX is a pay to play certification that many manufacturers no longer participate in due to the cost. THX also watered itself down by offering lower grades of certification (Compact, Select, Ultra and Dominus). There are many products without THX certification that outperform products with certification. Anyone that buys based on the certification is just falling to marketing prey.

Is this equivalent to their 6x6 range? I'm assuming the rename is because they ran out after the 696?

Yeah, that seems to be my read on it as well. The NR6100 is probably the non warehouse version with no significant difference. Also interesting to note that on the higher-end RZ line (looks like they only offer one new model called RZ50), they have switch to the Dirac room correction although it looks like this model uses their Accu room correction.

Quite frankly, I didn't think they were going to survive after the merger fell through with Sound United. I I'm glad they are offering new models.

I got the TX-NR595 when it was on sale at Costco for $350. What does this add? HDMI 2.1 (and 8k capability)? 90 watts per channel instead of 80 watts per channel? Not sure if it is worth the price difference especially since I am not a gamer. Maybe if there was a 100 off sale?

No, he was referring to the TSR-700 which was supposed to have an upgrade to fix the 8K inputs that did not work properly.

TSR-7850 doesn't have 8k inputs.

If you're not a gamer and don't have any use for HDMI 2.1 for the foreseeable future, then I would just keep the model you have. At worst case, you can plug whatever needs HDMI 2.1 into your TV and pass the audio to the receiver via eARC. You would most likely not be able to notice any difference in wattage.

I had heard a little bit about the Klipsch acquisition, but had not been following closely. I had just been primarily reading horror stories over the last year about folks who needed support/parts
but were getting nowhere with Onkyo, and I hope that's not resolved.

Personally, I am very happy to see Onkyo still around and also have no problem recommending them (especially if the support issues got resolved). In fact, I own four at the moment (HT-SR800, TX-NR708, TX-NR646 & TX-RZ830), and they're all still going strong. I did face the bad cap/no sound issues with my NR708, but they handled that for free well after my warranty via the recall.

My RZ830 is my primary receiver, and I am very happy with it. About my only complaint would be the room correction (I would have preferred Audyssey over their in house solution). I am glad to see them moving to Dirac.

I would agree with you about Onkyo having a more lively and vibrant sound then Denon. To my ears, both Onkyo and Yamaha have similar sound quality. I'm currently running a Denon in my main home theater system but am waiting to see if Costco gets a new Yamaha model soon.

Whats going on with Onkyo?

Insolvency hit Onkyo after reporting a global revenue decline of 49.3% in its fiscal year 2020 with a record net loss of over $90-million (from FY 2019). The Tokyo Stock Exchange gave Onkyo a limited window of time to get itself together or be delisted from the JASDAQ stock exchange. - Mar 25, 2021

Again, this is old news. Onkyo is fine now, bought out by VOXX. Somebody was bound to see value in a well-known and respected brand, sooner or later. Their story reminds me of Volvo back in 2010, before Geely bought them from Ford - everybody was writing them off.

Great to hear that Onkyo is in good hands now! I've owned several Onkyo receivers for the past 2 decades and very happy with their product. I have TX-NR696 and HT-RC460 currently.
