It's all relative - we own two Dyson vacuums and they're great. You pay a premium for overengineering.

Both a $2000 TV and a $200 TV will play the game, but one is better.

A first class ticket and a coach ticket will both get you there, but one is better.

My wife is the farthest thing from being materialistic. But I got this for her as a gift and she absolutely loves it. She can't believe how much less damaged her hair is than it used to be. So while it's certainly expensive, I wouldn't consider wanting healthy hair as materialistic. This thing truly works.

The special edition includes a separate travel bag in addition to the storage case which comes with both. MSRP for the travel bag is $60.

The product is really good. I've had a few guest stay over and use mine and purchase a 400 hairdryer ( what they thought would never happen shortly after.) Most men will not understand how long and damaging regular hair dryers are for long hair like women's. Worth is variable but if your time is worth enough that you can afford 400 hair dryers and groceries/rent then this will pay itself off. Many reports shown women shaving 5+ minutes off each blow dry and assuming 2-3 times a week, that's 8+ hours a year not staying in front of a mirror frying ur hair cause the core is wet but the outside is getting crispy.

I've had mine for 4 years now and it's going strong. Will probably end up repurchasing if this one ever dies.

To be fair, Dyson is clearly overpriced anyway. Good engineering but not always made with quality equivalent to the price. Their vacuums are actually a great example. Good vacuums, but not nearly as good as something like a Miele for a similar price.

The hair dryer is $400, very often dies after about 2 years (just outside of warranty). A $257 Sam Villa Ionic or $200 Rapido works just as well and won't break. Or a Buttercup, which is currently on sale for $160. The Dyson isn't clearly "better" than all of these.

And if Dyson is so overengineered, why is their warranty only 2 years? These things are known to go kaput.
