I have a couple pairs from years past and am very happy with them. I enjoy the ability to replace any and every part.

One thing to point out - if you have mid-long length hair and tend to take your phones off with one hand these will sometimes pinch off some hairs with them. I tried putting some electrical tape over the exposed phone cup-headband joints that cause this but it still happens on rare occasions.
I like the HD6XX for: 1) a reference set of HP's- these are THE baseline headphones in reviews, etc. 2) Vocal-centric recordings like Adele, or singer-songwriter piano and acoustic guitar stuff, 3) HD6XX will bring out more in the high mids and treble for analytical listening. critical/analytical listening with a flat(ish) tuning.
Otherwise I go for the Sundaras- which are just darn great headphones.
now that the 2nd set of foam pads has gotten used up they sit unused on the shelf until another $50 pad sacrifice.
the porta pros gladly fill in in the mean time.
