I got this laptop this morning. I had bought the $279 frontpage deal from Wal-Mart a month earlier, but I returned it last week as soon as I saw the Target ad.

This is so much better than the Wal-Mart one.

Display: IPS panel by LG, with vastly better viewing angles and colors than the Chi-Mei TN panel on the Wal-Mart version
CPU: 4-core Tiger Lake i3 vs. the 2-core in the Wal-Mart version
WiFi: The spec page indicates a 1x1 card, but the actual card contained within is a 2x2 card; the Wal-Mart version only had a 1x1 card
Price: $10 cheaper than the Wal-Mart version

And just like the Wal-Mart version, it has two RAM slots, with one populated (DDR4-3200) and one free.

The one and only downside is that the SSD is half the size and is SATA. But if you're going to be opening the computer anyway to throw an extra stick of RAM in, it's not hard to also replace the SSD and upgrade it to something like 500GB. The other upgrade that I'm making, since I'm opening the system up anyway, is replacing the WiFi with an Intel AX201 (can find them for around $10 used on eBay) so that I get WiFi 6.

I've been looking for a laptop in the sub-$300 price bracket to replace the aging dinosaur that my parents are using, and this is by far the best I've seen yet (though it does involve a few simple upgrades to make it great).

This is absolutely a front page deal. The RAM and the storage are on the low end, but it has the quad-core version of an i3 (vs. a dual-core in most budget laptop deals).

If I had to settle for a budget laptop, I'd rather have a faster CPU and an IPS screen. Especially if RAM and SSD can later be upgraded (which I haven't verified).

What else do 80% of people do with their computers? Most people aren't engineers, video editors, or high end gamers. If you can smoothly use MS Office, surf the web, and do some media streaming/playback most people are happy. What am I missing?

I hate that HP puts screws under the rubber feet. Once you pull them off they never attach the same way again.

Which is a better bang for your buck -- this laptop or the HP AMD Athlon from Target for $180 from a few weeks ago -- https://slickdeals.net/f/15369016-hp-laptop-14-1366x768-athlon-gold-3150u-4gb-ddr4-ram-128gb-ssd-180...
I bought that other AMD one but haven't opened it yet. I just need it for internet, Netflix, MS Office, and remote desktop for work, not for gaming. Thanks!

Would like to know this as well. I'm still using the $280 Costco i5 model and have been happy with it for the past 2 years (fan is annoying at times). Would also like to know if this one has HDMI 2.0 (HP webpage says 1.4b and so did the Costco model but it does 4K 60 Hz without issue).

Looks like the ssd type is random. The first one I bought had a HP sata (had to return it due to dead battery) and the second one had a Samsung nvme.
I had a second one on order that I cancelled after I did an in-store pickup, sure hope the one in my possession is nvme... Suspense!

If I wanted it to be like new, I would clean both surfaces really well, spray the rubber with 3m aerosol spray adhesive, reinstall.

NVME no go for me.
Adata SX8200 PRO recognized in bios, but wont install from Clean Win 11 image.
Newest BIOS version F16

2 ram slot and easu add another stick.
I think the hard drive has bitlocker turned on but I dunno if turning it off would make it work. It's definitely not as straight forward as my MSI gaming PC where you just plug in the SSD and then boot.

I was able to use hirens boot cd USB to install windows 11 successfully onto the ADATA but it still failed to register for some reason that I think is somewhere in the various bios settings. Dunno though.

Maybe? Just to make sure my NVME works, I put it back to my old Dell E5470 and attempt to clean install from USB Win11 image without issue.

I format it and put it back to HP.... still no go. Frown
I even turn SecureBoot off the bios, load IRST drive and still not recognize....

Appreciate any suggestion?

Just so that I know my USB Win 11 is working, I was able to clean install win 11 into the Samsung M.2 SATA B-key that come with the laptop.

Is it possible to run 2 additional monitors off of this laptop? I can plug one into HDMI, but cant get any signal out of the USB-C connector. Was hoping to have 3 extended displays - the laptop screen and two additional monitors.

Maybe you have MBR partitions instead of GPT?

Probably a dumb suggestion but have you tried resetting the BIOS to factory settings after installing the NVME? I recall having a similar issue with an older model similar laptop about a year ago.

Is it possible to run hackintosh on this laptop?
Or, does it still make sense to do hackintosh in 2021?
