I got this laptop this morning. I had bought the $279 frontpage deal from Wal-Mart a month earlier, but I returned it last week as soon as I saw the Target ad.

This is so much better than the Wal-Mart one.

Display: IPS panel by LG, with vastly better viewing angles and colors than the Chi-Mei TN panel on the Wal-Mart version
CPU: 4-core Tiger Lake i3 vs. the 2-core in the Wal-Mart version
WiFi: The spec page indicates a 1x1 card, but the actual card contained within is a 2x2 card; the Wal-Mart version only had a 1x1 card
Price: $10 cheaper than the Wal-Mart version

And just like the Wal-Mart version, it has two RAM slots, with one populated (DDR4-3200) and one free.

The one and only downside is that the SSD is half the size and is SATA. But if you're going to be opening the computer anyway to throw an extra stick of RAM in, it's not hard to also replace the SSD and upgrade it to something like 500GB. The other upgrade that I'm making, since I'm opening the system up anyway, is replacing the WiFi with an Intel AX201 (can find them for around $10 used on eBay) so that I get WiFi 6.

I've been looking for a laptop in the sub-$300 price bracket to replace the aging dinosaur that my parents are using, and this is by far the best I've seen yet (though it does involve a few simple upgrades to make it great).

This is absolutely a front page deal. The RAM and the storage are on the low end, but it has the quad-core version of an i3 (vs. a dual-core in most budget laptop deals).

If I had to settle for a budget laptop, I'd rather have a faster CPU and an IPS screen. Especially if RAM and SSD can later be upgraded (which I haven't verified).

What else do 80% of people do with their computers? Most people aren't engineers, video editors, or high end gamers. If you can smoothly use MS Office, surf the web, and do some media streaming/playback most people are happy. What am I missing?

links to buy ddr ram for an upgrade will be helpful ?
I left an SD link for 16GB RAM a little bit back - or, just look for it in the computer parts > memory section.

Which is a better bang for your buck -- this laptop or the HP AMD Athlon from Target for $180 from a few weeks ago -- https://slickdeals.net/f/15369016-hp-laptop-14-1366x768-athlon-gold-3150u-4gb-ddr4-ram-128gb-ssd-180...
I bought that other AMD one but haven't opened it yet. I just need it for internet, Netflix, MS Office, and remote desktop for work, not for gaming. Thanks!
It should work for that.
This is far more future proof.

Can someone tell me if this laptop is capable of adding dual external monitors? It has SuperSpeed USB Type-C® port, featuring 5Gbps signaling data rate. But some of the hp laptop don't support display with usbc.
Well they do not have Display Port however some adapters just use the 5Gbps and have their own GPU built into them so that way you could.

Saw limited supply at the Target down the street (No pickup available and cannot add to cart online), so I risked going there...didn't see any in the glass cabinets...the guy was really helpful, saw me perusing the glass cabinet and asked if I needed any help looking for something. I showed him this laptop on the Target app, and he looked at the model number...went through each glass cabinet and didn't see any, told me he'll check in the back...came back 5 minutes later with one in his hand.

The one I got has a Nvme SSD stick, and a Samsung 1r16 PC4-3200 RAM. Just ordered the same Samsung 4gb RAM on Amazon for $15 used-Like New to fill the other slot.
FYI: Look at youtube vids of similar design to remove the bottom cover. There's 3 screws hidden under the rubber strip by the hinge, and one under the one by the lid...the rubber strip by the lid is difficult to remove intacted, meaning the glue strip tends to separate from the rubber strip and get messed up.

Thanks OP! Repped.

Yours has nvme, not sata, that's my biggest desired upgrade. I'm going to try and open mine tonight.

Don't know you guys still remember the 2019 BF Costco deal

https://slickdeals.net/f/13524451-costco-members-hp-14-laptop-i3-1005g1-4gb-ddr4-128gb-ssd-win-10-s-280-free-shipping

It has very similar spec and the laptop most people got had i5 instead of it.

Just by looking these two laptops have very similar chassis. The biggest issue was the thermal design. The fan kicked in all the time which was very annoying. Ended up returning mine. Hope this is better this year.

That option comes and goes, at least in my area.

Looks like the ssd type is random. The first one I bought had a HP sata (had to return it due to dead battery) and the second one had a Samsung nvme.

Would like to know this as well. I'm still using the $280 Costco i5 model and have been happy with it for the past 2 years (fan is annoying at times). Would also like to know if this one has HDMI 2.0 (HP webpage says 1.4b and so did the Costco model but it does 4K 60 Hz without issue).
