There's comments like this in every MacBook Air M1 thread, but have no clue what they're talking about. Look into how this thing actually performs instead of thinking it's the same as the Intel chipsets with 8gb of ram.

A year old laptop that is going to run circles around any other comparably priced laptop.

Costco has two years warranty, so that's a plus

Hi - I'm looking to get the cheapest Mac for my daughter. Jumping in on this thread, since I don't know anything about Mac....Anyone have any recommendations? I'm thinking used, old, refirb, etc. Just needs basic functions. She had a hand-me-down one that died so looking to replace. Will be looking at ebay, marketplace, etc. Any advice on how old / models to go without immediate regrets is appreciated. Thanks!!!

Seriously, at the price point, get this one. It'll be dramatically better than anything you get for $500 used.

Hello Adam, here are the best options for each price range:

Used, good condition 2012 13" macbook pro
200+135 (upgrades)=300
pluses:
easily upgradable: 16gb ram for ~50, 500gb SSD ~50, new battery ~35
minuses:
Apple supported up to catalina, 2 versions back. Problem? minor. still get security updates

Used, late 2014 mac mini
~200+65 (upgrades)= 265
pluses:
Still fully supported by Apple, can upgrade to latest OSX (monterray)
Can add PciE, nvme ssd in additional to stock 1tb hhd (~15 adapter, $50 256 apple nvme)
minuses:
Not portable

Used 2015 15" macbook pro
~500+115 (upgrades) = 615
pluses:
upgradability: replace slower, small stock ssd to PCIe3.0 nvme 1tb ssd (~15 adapter, 100 drive)
still performant (4xi7 intel)
portable
ports
minus:
...... maybe intel processor...

New 2020 M1 Air
~800
pluses:
performance
portability
new
can do thermal pad mod for performance similar to MBP
minuses:
non-upgradability

I was thinking of making a video about those configurations and the upgrading procedure, if you think it would be useful, let me know.

If she's OK with a Mac, get this. Full stop.

Great machine, very reliable, and wicked fast for just about everything. The M1 processor in these is a performance and battery life game-changer relative to the intel chips. As long as she doesn't need windows for some specific software, this is absolutely the way to go.

So sick of all the discussions around RAM, especially those that play down people's need for a larger memory... So much hand waving. Can someone please use numbers when discussing things?

There are already plenty of discussions around this. If you learned basic CS you would know that using MacOS doesn't magically reduce the amount of memory needed for certain tasks.

Yes, the "unified memory" or whatever could make virtual memory access faster, but that doesn't fundamentally change things. And there is no evidence whatsoever Mac's memory management is superior to Windows, so stop any nonsense around that.

Finally, I have definitely seen this dreaded dialog on my MacBook Air M1. Very occasionally but it happens. If I had a 16G version I may not see it at all.

I was a RAM snob like you, but for $750 at Best Buy I figured why not give it a shot. I was wrong. Some people need 16GB but most people don't… and those people are probably better off with a Pro anyway.
Same boat, got the BB deal and I was happy to eat crow. M1 with the 8gb is insanely fast compared to other laptops in its price range. I say this as a gamer with a 5800x and 32gb desktop config.

Seems like a good deal if you need a laptop now. But, the 720p camera (a nicer quality web cam is somewhat important in the zoom/webex/skype era) and the limited one external 6K display output…. I'm sure these will be upgraded in the next M2 Air. Plus maybe they'll put back an HDMI, SDXC port, MagSafe, like the MacBook Pros. Who knows, maybe the miniLED and 120Hz ProMotion display will trickle down to the M2 Air… but then again so will the notch.

Can it run any modern games on Steam? What about commercial enterprise software? Nope. So what circles are they running? You can pay $800 for a fast Facebook machine? This is awful value.

Great deal. Can't compare to Intel laptops. These apples last 5+ years without major issues or slowdown, excellent value

I bought one for my wife's birthday less than a month ago (she really needed one). Think they'll price adjust?
