How easy is this to install yourself? If difficult, how much would you expect to pay someone?

edit: nvm this is 230v so too much hassle to get that installed as well
You'd be surprised. Depending on your house, it might be easy to do if its not a long, complex run.

To put in 240v line is about $800 for about 6ft run.

Also an EPA license is required to legally work with refrigerants. It may be better to install the unit then hire an HVAC person to charge the refrigerant.
Not true. You do not "charge the refrigerant". These units are specifically designed to be able to be installed by the DIYer. Home Depot has a page with tips on installing these for the DIYer. They do include the disclaimer "Some states require these kinds of HVAC services be handled by licensed professionals. Check with your local code official about necessary licensing and permit requirements. "

That being said, people without the aptitude or basic skills to do this should not.

This is it. The breaker box is right there for 240v. Easy install for your setup.

You mentioned needing a vacuum pump and gauge set, which are needed to charge the refrigerant. So yes, EPA requires a license to service or install any device or appliance that uses refrigerant [epa.gov]

Is low ambient a worse choice than a regular ambient range if I'm in Florida? I intend to use this only for cooling in a 700 sqft garage with insulated doors and ceiling.

we just did this in our 400 sq/ft, insulated door and attic above. not knowing, we just went with what the installer recommended, 12k unit. i think it is barely adequate, and we may go to a bigger unit. inside on a hot day can easily get to 95, and it takes a while to get it cool. i used to work on cars a lot, but now i mostly polish them. the installer said unit(not pioneer) would cool 1 deg in 20 min, and it seems about right. i think we would like 1 deg 10 min. however, it is ok to work after about an hour, because the unit is still cooling, and the air is moving. at about 78 deg it is cold to me, but it will take most of the day to get down that far. we had to get additional wiring, but the entire cost, including tt&l was 2316. during the winter, it heats really fast

Believe these qualify for a 300 tax credit as well. You can also buy 15 percent off coupons on eBay to get it even cheaper
Any more info on the tax credit?
