Why not just buy this and trade in to Best Buy for the 13 mini? Upgrading from 12 to 13 costs about $80 (assuming you're not in CA where the tax is much higher) so you're looking at paying under $400 for a new iPhone 13. You could even upgrade to a higher end 13 for a few more $. The BBY deal is probably one of the best ones this year if you have an iPhone 12:

I have Total Wireless, and plan to keep the device for 12 months anyway. Note that the referral program is generous, and you can essentially go the first 5 months for a total cost of $50 for the service using the referral codes ($25 each of the first 2 months, and the next 3 come free with the code ... this if you don't use much data, or 4 months if using more data) (you can add as you need) ... and it's Verizon towers ...

I think for the most part you're right. When I last looked a couple of years ago Total Wireless is on Verizon only. Straight Talk offers multiple carriers and you have to look at a code on the box to see what network it's under. Or sometimes you can tell by the phone if it doesn't support all bands/networks.

Also in the past some Total Wireless/Straight Talk phones were the same item at Walmart and just came with two different sim cards. And you just popped in the SIM for which ever carrier you want to use and it's not easy to switch the carrier within the first 12 months after you activate it.

They both fall under the Tracfone brand, along with Simple Mobile as well.

Don't you need to pay for a month or two of a plan also to do the upgrade? So, with tax, probably at least another $100 (on top of the $80 or so)?

The battery size difference is actually pretty small between them. 2227 mAh vs 2438 mAh. The battery life difference comes from the increased efficiency in the A15 processor.

Nope. BBY is a straight trade in. The only 'catch' is you have to pay the full price - no monthly installment plans.

Edit: you have to hand over the old device during the trade-in so if you're using the iPhone, make sure you back it up beforehand.
