Yes you can, it has been done with the iPhone trade in deals. Just hand in the old phone and get the new phone. Contract/bill will stay the same. New phone can be unlocked within 40 days or unlock right away if you chat nicely with a T-Mobile agent says you paid the phone in full
No need to add a line. Just need to use one line to upgrade. People have done multiple "upgrades" back to back with the same line. I think bestbuy has a policy that one line can only be upgraded certain amount of times per year (I think I've heard 5 but unverified). I have friend who has done 3 this year no problem

If you select activate later and then add to cart. They'll ask you if you want to add a line or upgrade. Click upgrade and then it'll give you an option to trade in a phone and tell you how much value it is. If you keep going you then apply the value to reduce the total and log on your T-Mobile account to check out. You'll have to do a store pick up at a bestbuy near you though
