But if I was only going to own one drill and impact, I would stick with 18/20 volt tools for the versatility, extra power, value, and the 1/2" chuck. And if in the future, you decide to add say a circular saw, vacuum or nail gun... whatever, you could still do that easily.
Should I rethink of 18/20v? I initially thinking of getting ryobi (ordered one for 50) for battery compatibility thinking of I ever need other tools can easily get from mp or Craigslist and use the same battery. But got dewalt as a friend said it's better. Not sure if 12v isn't common and later I would find it difficult in finding compatible tools.
Google it

The 12v line is certainly more limited in tool count than the 20v line, but to say they haven't 'been made in awhile' is a head-scratcher.

It depends on what you are using it for. Most homeowners will be fine with either one. The 12v is light weight and compact. I am personally brand agnostic and buy the tools I need from whichever brand has the best quality and price. I can't speak for craftsman as I just got into the line with the bogo for the 4ah battery/charger for $99 and get the $200 versastack radio free - I thought it was a good deal for a job site radio that can also be AC powered (since I only have one battery).
Maybe pick up this [lowes.com]2 tool combo (saw and drill w/ batts/charger) ...it should qualify.
