The new 12v stuff is great. I even know many contractors who use them as their go to until they need the power of a 20v. They are lighter and produce less fatigue. For a diy homeowner these are more than capable. I barely touch my 20v stuff anymore.
I would probably lean towards the circular saw myself. It's not a big one, but it's enough to do some 2x4's or some plywood if needed. I wouldn't expect to do a large project with it though.
I really like my 12v stuff, but I can't help but feel that DeWalt is competing with themselves. The Atomic line 20v stuff+ power stack battery is almost as light and compact as my 12v stuff, and I only need one battery type.

I can't decided whether to keep investing in 12v or take advantage of all the Powerstack deals going on.

That said, ignoring the existence of the Atomic line, the 12v line is great. Super light, enough power for almost everything I do. It's not going to drive 3 inch lag bolts all day, and I wouldn't try to auger through really tough wood but I rarely use my 20v XR stuff on the job site anymore.

Yes. I have almost 10 DeWalt 20V XR tools, and also the 12V XTREME impact driver, and that one 12V tool is the first thing I use for just about everything. I use my 20V XR impact driver, XR impact wrench, and XR drill/driver as backup.

The 12V is lighter of course, and has a precision mode, allowing me to work better for things not requiring maximum power.

Of course there are tasks that it cannot do.

Looking to pick up a dcf850 and a short body drill, how often do worthwhile deals come up on the dcf850 combo?

For a new homeowner just getting into DIY, what free tool would you recommend?

I got the 20v atomic drill and driver with 2x power stack batteries and charge last week for 229+ tax. The 12v are okay, but if you have big boy work to do they won't cut it

Oscillating multi tool. So many uses for it. As far as the other recommendation of the circular saw I personally think you'd be better off getting a corded circ saw for 40-50 bucks or even a used one. You can pick up old corded craftsman's in marketplace for about $20 often. It will be much more useful in the long run.
