Too late. Everyone bought from BH
Just a reminder for everyone to check: I had the Discover 30% off (max $30) on my amazon account - so, I just used 1 point and got $30 off. I also had the AMEX 15% off (max $15) on my account. So, might be good to check if either of those are active on the account .

NOTE: As a plus, Discover also has Amazon.com as part of its 5% Cash Back this quarter

Thinking for years to buy or not to buy a NAS, now probably will pull the trigger on DS220+

Few questions
Can I take out one of my large NTFS drives and put it in there with the ability to take it back to PC?
Instead of RAID 1 can I set up daily backups from one drive to the other from within the system
I assume it's linux based, can I install different things, such as transmission, or does it have useful programs natively? How safe and hackable is this?
I'm just debating if there is an advantage to change my local storage drive from internal hard drive to a NAS
Thanks

I'm pulling the trigger. I currently have a Iomega x200 ("hacked" to cloud edition) with 2x6TB WD Reds

Idle, even with a 120MM fan blowing air across the chassis, NAS temp is around 85F.
Under load, NAS temps hit 100F...

It's old.. slow... pretty much a basic file dump for backups.

I wanna get into a modern NAS setup!!!

Wish me luck!

could I hook up an external HD for even more storage? do they sell/make external usb enclosures to add more space. not necessarily interested in RAID, just more storage for mah movies.
Yes. I have a segate 4TB portable USB 3.0 attached to a DS220+ for those files that are not *crucial* but still need NAS access to. Works great.

This is false. Synology single volumes can be set up across expansion bays.
You are correct. I have a 517 and could have done a single volume. However, I will note, when I installed my 517 at that time, and not sure if it has changed, it was recommended to do a new volume vs expanding first volume due to some performance issues and some other minor factors. That could have changed by now, not sure, as I haven't looked it up since then. Being a second volume didn't impact how I intended to use it so I went that route.

I just don't understand these why don't they automatically hold like 8 to 10 hard drives it just doesn't seem cost efficient at all

Can you explain how I check for this? Do I just use my discover card in the checkout and see if it shows up?
There were previous threads on Slickdeals with the activation offer. I had activated these deals on my Amazon account at that time. Best way to check to see if you have anything is just to use 1 reward point on either of these cards (AMEX or Discover) and see if you see the discount on the final checkout page at Amazon

i should have been more clear, i was more offering advice than technical capability

you DO NOT...absolutely DO NOT want to span volumes across to expansion units. lots of horror stories on the synology subreddit. i wish that Synology would include a disclaimer of sorts, or flat out not even allow it

These are very expensive at these prices still. Use An old computer and load FREE NAS as an OS for a better bargain!

I tired to last night but the coupon wasn't there. I'd rather buy from Amazon anyway, so I guess I'll take the win.

Thanks Smilie That refreshes my recollection. I just recalled that when I got my first expansion unit it was clearly noted as possible but not a good idea (and so I didn't). Sounds like things haven't changed and good to know.

For some context here, the reason there's caution around expanding existing storage volumes to an expansion bay is because of potentially borking your whole volume if anything happens to that device. Meaning, accidentally or intentionally powering off the expansion bay, or disconnecting the eSATA cable between the two. Its the equivalent of ripping out the drives if you had a single unit with that many disks. That said, if either of those concerns are minimal, it works. Personally, I'd opt for a bigger model if you think you're going to need it (I know that's hard to predict too). Or, just use the expansion as your backup of your current synology.

in for a 220+ since it's my first NAS.

Which memory upgrade is recommended from Amazon to make it 6GB?
