An alternative is an Android tablet running an app like Touch Portal or Unified Remote. If you have an old tablet lying around you're not using much this is an alternative to do the same thing.
I use Touch Portal and it works very good plus I can use the same tablet for other things.
Touch Portal will do anything Stream Deck will do plus it doesn't have the limitations of the hardware keys - you can set up as many buttons in Touch Portal as you can fit on the screen. On my 10" tablet I have Touch Portal set up with an 8 wide x 7 grid of keys (1" x 5/8" sized keys) = 48 keys. And you can make as many different screens with different key configurations as you like. That capability alone makes it better than the Stream Deck.
Regardless of the marketing the Stream Deck's "tactile feedback" isn't important as you're not touch typing on a vertically angled device on a stand.

I have an old Amazon Fire tablet which I convert using Amazon Fire Toolkit and will use that for this.

But a real world use would be if you're into, say, selling on eBay, you could have one button launch your excel bookkeeping file, another launch your word doc with a shipping label template, another open the bookmark of orders pending shipping, and so on.
If you're into photo editing, each button could have a different keyboard shortcut. The display makes all the difference, since many keyboards have macro buttons, but it's remembering which button does what that's the hard part. To be honest, without the display on the keys this item wouldn't be nearly as useful.
And that's just scratching the surface. It can chain together actions and really save you time from a productivity point of view. If you're into efficiency and technology, you'll love it. If you hate complicated things even if they're useful, it would probably gather dust and not get used.
If you're on the fence, consider getting a gaming keyboard with complex macro keys like the Logitech G910. It has some 10 (to 30) macro keys and a lot of other useful features. It's only lacking the display, but it's a whole keyboard and it costs less then this thing. The Elgato is just a cherry on top if you like the Macro feature but are willing to pay for ease of use.
