It really comes down to what features you are using.

If you are into heavy formula or advanced features (like cloud) latest would benefit. Apart from this and security (if you don't open unnecessary files it's not an issue), you are good with any old office. Basics not changed.

Search "Microsoft keyfinder" and you'll have tools to extract all keys on your system.

It's possible thru the command line, too.

The product is "official" - meaning the key is a legitimate one and the product you install is from Microsoft.

It's only the "licensing" that's likely not being followed.

Eg. A corporation buys a site license for 1000 PCs/keys. They use 990, 10 left over. Someone "breaks" the licensing agreement and resells the keys. Those 10 keys are as good as the first 990, but the legal "license" to use them hasn't been given to the buyers of those 10 keys.

How does Microsoft find out?
If they suspect, can always do site audits. Or if those 10 key buyers screw up and give their keys to others to use at the same time. Etc.

But here's the thing - Microsoft's already been paid for the entire 1000 keys, so what's the incentive to spend time and money chasing after "gray" keys?

Miss the days of in person Windows and Office launches where they gave away free copies... I'll keep wishing for a free 2021 key...

Thanks, if you just go to the pricing page, it only shows personal an business subscriptions. If you then click on "get off up to 95% off", it takes you to the lifetime purchase info, may give this a try.

From a consumer perspective, subscription models are horrid, especially with software like this that:
- has completely free alternatives that are just as good for 99% of people
- you aren't using all the time. If you're a student perhaps (Word, Excel maybe, PPT maybe) but for "home"?

I've pretty much given up on Microsoft. Looking to move to Linux after reading that Windows 11 is a piece of crap. MS Office offers very little new with each release that's actually useful, and something like Libre Office can do pretty much everything for free. Stop buying MS products. That's the only way they'll learn that what they're creating is garbage

I've had 365 accounts on my laptop from past jobs. Current job doesn't have it.
I tried to install this. Didn't work.
I uninstalled everything office related. Didn't work.
I keep getting a "code already used" and can't activate anything.

Thoughts?
