While i prefer emby over plex, their 25 device limit that you cannot see or control is a joke. They really need to improve that.

Turned off by the 25 device limit and that some of the client apps require premium or pay-to-unlock.

Switched to the free and open source JellyFin and never looked back.

Used to be lots of discussion on their discussion board about it. They couldn't get why their customers thought it was a big deal. I've never purchased it because of it.

How does the EMBY dvr work? Is it anything like Channels DVR, where we add our sources by providers like Spectrum, Frontier, Youtube TV, and then it pulls the TVE channels? Or, is it more like Plex's DVR where you need more hardware like HD Homerun tuners and you log in to your own cable provider? If so, nothing beats Channels DVR.

It depends on your needs and what you like better. They are very similar. Plex is tried and true and emby is up and coming. I've had great experiences with Emby and chose to continue with their services. I'd compare and contrast the differences to see what's right for you. There are many articles online that compare these two services.

I have both lifetime subs for plex and emby (back all the way to when it was called mediabrowser). I've gone back and forth between the apps, most recently I've been primarily using emby on my nvidia shield. Plex has more device support.. to me that is about the biggest difference.

Yea... they may code but their business decisions are somewhat... lets leave it at that.

I chose Emby because it is much more flexible. I have several friends with disabilities, and so the fact that Emby is much more willing to accept plug-ins was definitely of interest. While there is still no plug-in for descriptive audio (for my blind friends), multiple options for closed captioning allowed me to find the one that worked best.

It appears that it is just an interface for you to get to your media served to any device that is on the internet. You have to store the media on your own computer?, very strange to me. Why would you need a service for this? aren't there applications that can just sit on your server and do this without a paid subscription, just a forwarded port from your server or PC? This may make thing a bit easier to configure and has a nice interface, but seems a bit overpriced for a media front end. If you want to stream live TV, to your phone again, you are providing the media source with a tv tuner.
I think the payment is primarily to do with the epg interface that all the clients can have. They started to include epg data as well so I've probably saved around $60 over the past few years not having to pay for scheds direct...

You can also hook up iptv providers into the epg and be able to muck around with it using a virtual tv provider where you can get your own custom channels created.

There is a free variant called jellyfin that I'd probably use if I haven't already paid for emby 7 years ago. I don't know if that one gets free epg data or what but where I exist that's what it's always boiled down to - needing to pay someone for the epg data...

I do not have Emby or Plex, and I am thinking about getting lifetime, but witch is really better? For video playback? Music shuffles, etc..?

Emby is ok. But, if you're going to pay, just go for Plex & Plex Pass. It's is the most mature and feature-rich media streamer. If you're looking for an alternative, check out Jellyfin - a very promising competitor that's open source and free.
