It's Best Buy. Most people probably live within 15 minutes of a Best Buy store. Just buy this. When it arrives, leave it in the box unopened. If a better deal comes along, buy that instead, and return this one to Best Buy. They'll accept the return without any hassle since it's unopened. And the factory seal being intact means they can put it right back on their store shelves so you impose minimal cost to the store as well.

That turns this problem from you saying "damn, I should've waited for a better deal", into Best Buy saying "damn, we should've offered a better sale price."

My guess would be they're trying to say "not for laptops" cause if they just list the size in inches people will still be like: "will this fit in my laptop."

What coupon is everyone talking about?

I ordered 3 of these from WD yesterday. It says 2 day shipping but I have a feeling it's going to take a week for them to actually ship them. My local Best Buy just got them in stock. Can you cancel an order from Western Digital?

Not all stores do it. I had to drive ~25-30 minutes to a different store (as opposed to 10 minutes to the store closest to me). All good, I was going in that direction anyway. Saved ~$71 on a 2TB SN850, so I think it was worth it. For a smaller amount, might not be worth the drive (time + gasoline).

I ordered from WD on Friday and just got my shipping notice today.

In order to cancel your WD order, you need to check your order history online. If it shows as Processing Order, you can click on the Cancel button. If it shows as Preparing to Ship, it is too late to cancel..

I'm debating if I should grab 2 more of these now or just wait. I have a 4 Bay NAS with 2 8 TB reds right now set up in a RAID configuration and I still have 6TB left available.

Can you recycle multiple drives and get more than one coupon? I'd need four of these Reds and I'm sure I have some old laptop drives and other crap I would be happy to hand over for $23 or so off each.

EDIT: Never mind, fine print is one per household!

I saw someone online use 1 coupon to buy multiple new drives. I didn't try it. I used two old drives to get two coupons to buy two new drives.

The coupon says 1 per household but they don't verify that.

I got two coupons. Key is to be nice to the agent!!!

Then why put unnecessary hours on the drive? Get them as you need them.

Nah. Not going to happen. Get them while you can.
I agree. They sell out the last two deals that went around $150. You don't see this price that often.

People are picking up spares and building their NAS.

Sorry no, I was talking about the 8TB drives in the original post. Those are the drives I purchased and verified are 7200 RPM drives. I know the listing stated 7200 RPM, but considering I could not even find this specific model on Western Digital's website, I wanted to be sure.
Thanks

Sh!t, that's a good point... Honestly hadn't thought about that. I already have 7 WD drives. And what they did was pretty disgusting with CMR vs. SMR. But I also question whether it even makes a difference? For example I used to avoid shopping at Walmart at ALL costs. For years I never set foot in there. Then, over time, I "realized" that it's not the STORE that's the problem. It's the society + laws + culture that allow for massive corporations to f*ck people over and do disgusting sh*t. In other countries (which have more overall respect and protection for workers and individuals) there are laws that prevent corporations from screwing people to a greater extent. With serious fines to match, not the slap on the wrist that we like to give out here. In the US, my individual avoidance of Walmart (or WD) changes nothing at all. Now if we vote, change laws, etc. then a company like WD might be handed a massive fine in the form of some % of their gross profit for pulling off the disgusting, disingenuous move they did.
SMR drives are inferior products compared to CMR drives, so unless there's a drastic price difference or your drives are only for archival purposes you should aim to get CMR drives. The major disadvantage with SMR is writing over previously used sectors. Look at roofing shingles as a literal analogy. If you need to replace an area of shingles chances are you'll need to mess with and move some other shingles.

WD recycle coupon (15%) is a no-go for me at Best Buy store. Store manager said coupon is good on retail prices only and not on sale price. The coupon is In Store only so I could not be able to use it online. Still I bit and bought two online

In for 2. Looks like they are sold out on WD and Best Buy's site gave me a 'no longer in stock' error on my first attempted purchase (successful when I bought 1 at a time). I'm guessing they will be sold out soon at BB.

Chase Freedom credit card has 10% cash back (up to $25 max).

How were you able to apply the recycle coupon online?

I've seen it at 100, but definitely not 8TB. This is a steal. I just bought a Samsung SSD T5 for 225 so, this is a great steal

Sorry I meant, I read online someone used a coupon to order multiple drives in one transaction. You have to use the coupon in STORE.
