I know everyone hates on the Fire HD tablets, but for $20, these are a no-brainer for simple use. They're not for gaming or multitasking at all, but for watching a movie or using Alexa or controlling lights/etc they're perfectly serviceable.

There's a SD slot but if you wanted the 32GB instead of 16GB, it's $27.

Quad-Core: 1.3 GHz, with 1.5 GB of RAM (same as the 8th gen)

edit: use XDA Fire Toolbox to remove ads to speed it up

I'm not saying you should buy this at all (unless you need something to teach you to slow down and be more Zen) but old tablets make great clocks. There are a bunch of "big clock" apps that will keep the tablet awake as long as it's plugged in. I always set the screen to the lowest brightness setting that permits the numbers to be viewed, otherwise the LCD light makes it too hard (for me) to sleep.

If you yourself can't use this then think about an elderly relative who's eyes ain't so great anymore.

Sorry about the low quality of the pic, which shows either the 7th or 8th gen 8" Amazon tablet.
And for those unaware, getting Play Store onto these is very easy. Lots of simple YouTube step by step guides!
Can be used for a trade in and get $20 gift card and up to 20% off a new tablet.

I could find some uses for these, but honestly it's the micro USB that stops me. I'm making an effort to not buy any more micro USB devices.
Do you mind share your views on the anti micro USB devices? Thanks

the problem with that is that the clock apps will stop working on the tablet at some point, unless you write your own.

I have one of these and it worked great for a long time. I got an update from Amazon and the battery went from only needing plugged in every other day to not lasting more than a couple hours and my apps running slow. I reached out to them and they said it's because they put an Alexa app onto the devices and it caused this but even having it disabled didn't help the performance.

my original post got "cleaned and hidden" as usual, so it's not blatantly obvious that this is NOT A GENERAL PURPOSE TABLET.

you're basically paying $20 for a screen to run a dedicated app. people have chimed in with especially good uses: a clock, an Echo Show, lightswitches, picture frame, Netflix, locked to a menu for a restaurant, etc.

These tablets have one feature that they hold over the latest variants - They have working root and TWRP, as well as custom ROM support. We currently have Android 8.1 running on this with LineageOS 15.1 - https://forum.xda-developers.com/...1.4328503/

Can VLC (or other) be installed?
Can one watch home videos off of a card? Or DVD rips?

Yes, very easily. My kids fire tablets have vlc installed for when we're traveling and don't have Wi-Fi.

Alternately, buy a Plex Pass subscription. Sync / downloads are a breeze and a lifesaver for trips without wifi. And no need to buy any additional devices; just use what you have already.

Much better off just buying a used Nexus 7.

*This post was sent from a Nexus 7. Nearly a decade later, and still haven't found a good replacement.

I'm thinking of using these for a wall mount controller for home automation, specifically Home Assistant. Will this be too slow for that? Will be powered all the time so not worried about battery life.

these devices are pretty much useless and for good reason they are sold for $20. anytime I bought fire tablets, even kids didn't show interest in using them.

How do you unlock the rom and install the twrp in the first place?

I was successful in utilizing the toolbox, has any one been able to chrome cast something like Netflix from these tablets? I was only able to utilize the hybrid install unless I am to side load Netflix as well?

thanks in advance
