For anyone considering this just know that it may limit your future flex on where you can buy renewal codes. Amazon will manage your subscription on behalf of Microsoft. I personally prefer to have the sub managed directly by Microsoft so I can use any code sources I find. others may not care. just fyi

Just did this. This is how it needs to be done. It doesn't matter what amazon shows. What MS registers is important.

1. Make sure your old amazon MS office subscription is not on auto-renewal on Amazon. (Accounts -> Memberships & Subscriptions -> Turn off auto-renewal)
2. Buy MS office family on amazon
3. Obtain license from your latest order (Accounts -> Memberships & Subscriptions -> Manage Licenses)
3. Login to your MS accounts accounts.microsoft.com (This is the account you want your product license to be added -> Typically where your last year license is registered)
4. Follow instructions 'How to redeem a Microsoft 365 of Office 365 digital code [onmsft.com] to enter product code.
5. MS will extend your current subscription
6. Check on amazon, it will show latest expiry date and old subscription will disappear replaced by newer expiry date
7. Follow step # 1 for latest order and turn off auto-renewal.

Note: I think this can be done n times to extend the subscription.

Note: Ms does not show when my sibscription expires but links me to AMZ where correct expiry shows. I think, I could see the expiry date with last year subscription on MS site. My guess is once auto-renewal is cancelled in few days it should reflect on MS site (not a big issue)

I am seeing the same thing. I think when I did this in the past years, the system will take some time to show the combined subscriptions. I am hoping that's still the case.

Update: I just checked again and seems my subscriptions have been combined and showing the new combined renewal date.

Did you hit activate on the new license to combine them or just do nothing and wait?

This is one of my favorite deals of the year but I'm really conflicted with this purchase.

I've been using Office 365 for quite a while, maybe 10 years?. In the early days, when everything was managed via MS, you could stack these really easily and see the expiration date on microsoft.com. A few years ago my sub got moved over to Amazon and it's been a nightmare since.

Just this past Sept, Amazon cancelled my MS 365 account (I had bought a subscription in Sept 2020 and Dec 2020) so I should have AT LEAST got to Dec 2021 with those stacked but its just so tiring trying to explain everything to Amazon. I did end up getting them to comp me a new subscription in Sept. My subs seems to be separate and they cancel me and then I lose any overlap.

they keep asking if I am activating the new subscriptions with different emails and I keep explaining that I only have 1 microsoft account using my main email.

As I've said, I really like this deal that come around BF every year but man, sometimes I'm not sure if this $50 savings is worth it.

Just a reminder, if you' are active military or a veteran you can shop at the AAFES Exchange online—they still have this on sale at $49.99, and no sales tax. Plus they send you a retail code to renew/stack, no need to deal with the MS -> Amazon potential hassle

This one is 15 month and avoids the Amazon confusion.

It's possible that Amazon fixed their back end but in the past I've found that these don't stack. It *looks* like they do but Amazon will end stacked subs simultaneously on the year mark. So, thanks to getting burned before, wasting time with CSR's getting things sorted out, I'll only be buying one.

It seems AMZ is merging the subscription now. Last year, got same deal with Amazon, subscription was expiring Jan26th 2022. Now it shows Jan 27th 2023. i am seeing only one subscription in accounts now (took less than 1-2 minutes to reflect on amazon)

This whole Amazon managing the subscription thing is bogus. There's no need for that and it just creates problems.

I'm sure this is a totally stupid question, but does anyone have a contact at Amazon or MS who can fix this? I have 2 subscriptions and chatting to Amazon now, they say they cannot unlink the one expiring in a few days. I want to buy this deal but I am just concerned its going to link to the wrong subscription and then I'm going to (again) have 2 simultaneous subs instead of stacking.

As others have pointed out, be very wary if you already have an 'Amazon managed subscription'. I had been purchasing Microsoft Family every year from Amazon, and did so last year, not realizing that it would add a second subscription. I was fine with that, except they have some major issues with their backend -- on Microsoft's account site they showed the extended expiration date, however when my first Amazon subscription expired my Microsoft subscription was canceled. At Amazon it showed I had an active subscription still, but Microsoft had been canceled. I reached out to both Amazon and Microsoft. Amazon had to forward the ticket to their technical team and promised to personally follow up with me, and never did. I spent hours on the phone with Microsoft technical support, and went through multiple agents, with no resolution there either. They all could see I had purchased a valid license, but couldn't explain, or remedy the issue. So in the end I was out $50... and probably another $100 or so in frustration costs. So much so that I just spent all this time typing this up on my phone instead of enjoying my cup of coffee before my little one gets up just to try and keep anyone else from dealing with this nightmare. Maybe they've resolved things this year?

I have such a love hate with this deal each year. Last year, they would stack/extend and it was easy via microsoft to see the end date, but I had to talk to microsoft, and then amazon. In the end I got it all sorted, but a hassle. This year they finally got to manage the subscription piece (Amazon) working. So here's what worked for me.:
  • Buy deal
  • Activate license from amazon by logging into your microsoft account
  • Disable auto-renewal from amazon previous year.
  • Let it sit for 24 hours and then refresh amazon subscriptions and see renewal date.
You will have overlapping memberships, but make sure you disable auto-renewal so you don't get charged again.

NOTE: When you buy the subscription from amazon; microsoft will not show end date on your license.
