The only thing i can confirm is the simple solution works throughout the Chicago winter.
I just put mine out in the elements with no issues yet and I have had it since they were initially released.

Also you can do this same thing by using $1 12V USB car adapters and splicing a female adapter to the tip of that plug. That's my cheaper solution for indoor but the DROK is best for outdoor.
