In general, those ratings for a ladder are extremely conservative. A much larger person would generally have no problems using it as long as it was securely placed on solid ground and not jumping on it or something. Our society is extremely litigious, so manufacturer warnings almost always go overboard. However, this is my personal opinion based on my own experiences and nobody should assume that it will apply to them.

Check out the following discussion of ladder ratings. The consensus seems to be that ladder stress tests are completed at 3 times the recommended capacity ratings. Now I wouldn't go testing that limit, but I wouldn't worry about a bit of extra weight.

Would this be better than the step ladder that was on sale - that people said was heavy? I like the step ladder because it's compact

Great deal but only 225lb capacity? Anyone have this ladder that might be pushing the weight cpacity just a bit?

I have both. If I have to choose, I prefer this ladder. It is noticeably lighter and better reach than the stepladder. Since you mention compactness, you can't go wrong with the latter.

I have the aluminum for simple tasks, and the fiberglass for longer periods on the ladder. Either one is great, but one of each is my suggestion.

Thanks! I have a similar stepladder - might get this for the upstairs.

Too many variables for buying ladder - your own height, height of target you want to reach, your own weight, what you will be using it for, your own strength, whether you have another ladder of different height, etc. I have a 7ft ladder and hence this 5 ft ladder fits the need of carrying it around the house easily. 6ft for my need is redundant. To each their own.
