5 minutes to midnight (deal ends) and then you tell us??
They can detect a network share and won't back it up unfortunately. If you mount as iSCSI, it works but my Synology won't show files on it in it's file browser this way so you get it one way or the other.

Also one thing to note is any drive that doesn't get files written to it frequently, even if it's internal, is considered archival and will be considered "unplugged" and will have its data removed after 30 days, not just external drives. I have some old drives that hold old data or photos that don't get viewed and I have to remember to add a file to those drives. Got tired of doing that every 25-30 days and paid for the 1 year retention. For the stress and time it saves, $24/yr extra was worth it for me.
I am a current subscriber and have been for years. I could not find any method to pay for future service using the discount. Now that it's a publicly traded company, they can start treating us like we're nothing.

SMB share, remote mounting that kind of stuff would work, right?

No linux support on this plan. So no for most NAS.

So only Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage works for synology nas (linux distro) with Hyper Backup? (as mentioned in the link above?)

I currently have about 30 TB worth of data on a synology nas, that I have no back up for.

I just bought 3 14TB external drives as a backup but something like an online backup would be nice, encrypted of course

What would be the best cost effective online storage option for my use?

It's $24/yr extra to upgrade to their 1 year data retention plan. I got fed up with the stress of remembering to plug in drives every 30 days even with their e-mail reminders that it was worth it to me.
With that upgrade it removes that requirement of connecting the drive every 30 days?

[update] never mind, read your other post that explains it a little more clear. So for 2 years of retention it would be $50, plus the $65 already paid thats $115 for 2 years of unlimited PC/MAC backups.

Do they detect VMs? Thinking on launching a Windows VM on the NAS and mounting the Volumes as virtual external drives. Would they detect that?

That's a really good question and unfortunately I haven't tried that, sorry Frown overall for the price, I think Backblaze is pretty great. Just keep in mind they don't do a seed backup drive, so it may take a while for your initial backup to complete depending on your upload speeds. I have over 10TB backed up with them, and it took forever (~3-4 months nonstop) for the initial upload of around 6TB when I started w/ a 10mbps upload...

Edit: Saw your other message. Sorry it wasn't clear at first, was trying to send a response quickly to help folks make a decision since time was running out ;D

Also, FYI as an existing customer, I thought I'd be able to try to get the offer, but Backblaze doesn't have a review page for the purchase if you're logged in. I added 2 licenses and click "buy" as a logged in customer, you get charged immediately... not too happy about the UX of that and now I have 2 unused licensed I need refunded Frown

How fast are uploads if you have a gigabit upload speed? I'm afraid my provider would go nuts if I backed up 40TB.

I have 100 mbps upload, it detects network speed as to not hinder it, max I would go is around 80 mbps. You can always limit the speed as well or set it on a schedule. Thankfully my ISP is net-neutral and no caps.

They say they're uncapped and you have an option to increase the number of backup threads in the settings based on your computer's performance. So ideally you can upload at near your max upload speeds (not taking into account the file size, large sequential files being faster than 100s of small files but they seem to optimize performance on this in the background). To be fair, I haven't really monitored it closely after getting gigabit since I had already completed my initial backup a while ago, painfully on a 10mbps upload.

I hate that they delete your files while your service is active if you don't keep authorizing them. If your14TB drive dies and you don't have a backup you then need to redownload all 14TB from BB to a hard drive within 30 days of the last time it was connected and then connect that new drive so they are recognized by BB again to avoid the files being deleted?

What if you buy a new computer? Can you authorize the files on the new computer so they aren't deleted without needing to reupload?

At least from what I saw under my account settings they let you order a 8TB hard drive with your data in it for a fee, once you return it they give you the fee back. So if you have 14TB I guess you can order two 8TB drives instead of downloading the data.

For the other question I haven't seen anything about migrating the license to a different PC on their website.

You can request an external drive to be delivered, I actually just did this. They charge you $189 and you have 30 days to return the drive, once returned, you are reimbursed (minus shipping back fees).

I bought a cheaper drive to shuck, chose the directories I wanted on the website, ordered the restore drive, copied over data… then in the Backblaze program, just select the new drive and it'll detect it as the old one because of the hash on each file.

However, the current limit is 8 TB; they've hinted that since going public, there would be increases, though it's all a waiting game.

If it's a new computer, you just transfer the license over. Their website has many help articles for nearly every scenario.
