Costco being a giant, it's shame to still do like 19th century and check membership on entrance. From Entering shop, checkout to returns, always very big queues. I go Costco only on weekday noons due to this (also likely find my correct dress sizes on stock). They should learn from others to improve instore experience.

Some of my impression of Costco is the grass is greener concept - I've been a BJ's member for so long, that any "new" stuff is just refreshing (and I was a long-time Sam's member 10+ years ago, but I moved within the state and there are only 2 total Sam's in the entire state to begin with).
Costco has a better selection of clothing, footwear and take & bake style meals (and they're pretty good too). They also have pizza/hot dogs which are cheap and good. Costco also sells major appliances (fridges etc) which BJ's doesn't do in store. Costco also seems to sell a lot more keto/low carb stuff. They also seem to have more artsy-fartsy things like organic blah blah blah I could care less about.
BJ's prices tend to be better overall (on comparable products) although that's my impression not a calculation. I recall being in Costco once and checking BJ's price on 5 dozen eggs and it was $1 less. Costco's were "Cage free" not that I give a shit, but there was no other option. Costco also does NOT sell breakfast sausage (by me at least) which I thought to be very odd.
Gas prices are comparable. There are more BJ's in the northeast than Costco. I focus my buying @ BJ's due to the 5% back, frankly. BJ's also accepts MQ's, not that I do any of that, but when they run their own couponing program, their coupons frequently overlap such that you can get pretty good discounts if you're watching.
And regarding checking membership on entering? I was told by one greeter that all they need to know is if you have your card with you, I guess it's an issue people getting to the register and not having a card. So, I just walk by that person. Only one of them feels the need to actually see your card, even after I explained to them what the other person had told me.
Another minor annoyance is the Costco app seems to display different prices than in-store. BJ's is the price you would actually pay in the store selected, plus it will apply any saved coupons to your order. I used the app as a shopping list to make sure my order would qualify for the spend $100/get a free (any size) turkey promo they had before thanksgiving (although I didn't place the order through the app because I wanted to select the turkey myself).

I've seen that with Premier Protein shakes. BJ's sells 15 cnt, 11oz cartons (for $22.50). Costco sells the same product but 18cnt (for $33.99 according to the app, but that's probably not the in-club price)
