To be completely fair this process isn't difficult nor time consuming. It's actually just a few more clicks and presses than you've described.

That process is more involved than buying on Amazon and downloading via wireless, of course. But that's the price you pay working outside of Amazon's ecosystem.

New versions support Audible. Old versions do not. If you don't need Audible, go for the older Paperwhite.

Pretty sure you're reading one of the tablet specs and not the Paper White specs. From the PW listing they state "A single charge lasts up to six (6) weeks, based on a half hour of reading per day with wireless off and the light setting at 13. Battery life will vary based on light settings, wireless usage. Audible audiobook streaming over Bluetooth will reduce battery life."
