Good phone. Being in bed with AT&T? Not so good

WARNING PSA

Having gone through a literal 6 hour ordeal in my local Walmart store...these are not always shipped properly activated when purchased online. My first order went absolutely fine, but the second turned into a nightmare (AT&T suspended the line after a day, citing a point-of-purchase error). The local store should be able to fix it, however it's not a guarantee (in my case they returned the phone but couldn't resell it to me because their POS wouldn't scan it - wound up having to sell me a new phone from in-store). And because the e-receipt given to you by Walmart doesn't include the IMEI/SN of the phone you won't be able to get it fixed by AT&T.

I've been to a few Walmart stores in different states asking about this phone prior to this deal. Each wireless department says the same thing - "We almost never have this phone in stock, if the inventory says we do then we most likely only have ONE of them".

Can't re-iterate enough, if you want this phone go to the AT&T store and take advantage of their promotion that's running. Reading over the Walmart Black Friday iPhone post it seems like a lot of people are getting shafted by Walmart over weird activation/bill issues (not just limited to AT&T prepaid).
is there any info about the promotion online? I didn't see it when searching...

Is there any online information about this promo? I've searched online (eg. https://prepaidcompare.net/deals/), but not even seeing the phone on the AT&T or the AT&T Prepaid pages. Thanks.

Do you think the ATT SE promo is good enough to jump on now if a person could wait a month or two or three before buying a new phone for personal use? Thanks.

After how many months of continuous activation it can be unlocked?
You don't have to be in ATT network to unlock. you can use ATT MVNO on this phone and get it unlocked after 6 month.

I was pretty happy too see this deal, and actually managed to get one for pickup locally. However, as some others have pointed out, the more I think about it, I think Cricket is the better deal especially if you have a referral available.

Can anyone poke holes in this?

Cricket price is $180 with no extra taxes (it's service charges) and free shipping. Walmart of course charges your local tax, so final price for most of us will be between $170-180 plus driving time and expense.

If i buy from Cricket, I get 3 months of service included, where I get no bonus service from Walmart. If I can get the $60/mo service downgraded, then bonus! But I'll assume that's not possible anymore.

I can use a Cricket referral to get $25 or more credit, and also $5 CB from rak10. If I downgrade after the 3 months to the $30 plan, well then that covers at least month 4.

So worst case I have to pay $60 more for 2 months of service at months 5 and 6 to get phone fully unlocked. And discounted Cricket refill cards are always coming available.

All in all it seems like Cricket is a better deal, unless you NEED to have ATT prepaid service especially on a family plan.

Thoughts?
Most folks only want to get to "unlock". What about service after that? If you add in the cost of reasonable service for 12 months (in total), Tracphone seems to be the best.

Tracphone - $352.50; Phone (less 25% discount)+12 months of 2GB service (12 months to unlock)

ATT is $439 ($114 for phone; $50 for month 1 and $25 for months 2-12; 12 months to unlock) You do get at least 8GB of data with their $25/m plan (if prepaid for the year).

Cricket is $450; $180 for months 1-3; $270 for 4-12 (It would be lower if you don't mind moving out of Cricket after 6 months with port-out of the number, etc.) 2GB plan in months 3-12.

Mint - $289.50 (but requires a 2-year commitment but you do get 4gb/month plan)

Buying a used phone plus the $15/m Red Pocket plan would be about $380-$430 depending on the deals available. But the phone would be used.

Poke holes please!

Their *wonderful* website still says the store that cancelled my order because it wasn't in stock, has it in stock.

I think my success rate with walmart on slickdeals is about 1%

Freedompop? I forgot they were still around. Their free plan is for 10 minutes, 10 text and 25mb data per month. Sheesh. Free plan is for really really light user or the dead user. After that it is $15 per month with 250 minutes, unlimited text and 1 GB data. Better options out there….. I can't see how mvno can be enough to unlock a locked phone. MVNO don't even give updates and ATT has no record of you being a legit att customer. I believe cricket would work perfectly fine with updates with the prepaid att as cricket is pretty much att but I highly doubt red pocket would. I would just listen to the prepaid att unlock requirements. ATT got stricter about their requirements compared to a few years ago.

Regarding going into ATT store instead:

I just called the ATT store + there's none in stock anywhere according to them.

Managed to snag one at a Walmart not too far away.

Last time I replaced an ATT postpaid phone with a new prepaid ATT phone, I had to call in to get it to activate. No biggie, just told them I wanted to replace phone with current one, but you may have an additional hoop to jump through.
I'm using an ATT IPhone SE prepaid on an ATT postpaid plan right now that I bought at Walmart and i just had to switch SIMs. Started working right away.
