WARNING PSA

Having gone through a literal 6 hour ordeal in my local Walmart store...these are not always shipped properly activated when purchased online. My first order went absolutely fine, but the second turned into a nightmare (AT&T suspended the line after a day, citing a point-of-purchase error). The local store should be able to fix it, however it's not a guarantee (in my case they returned the phone but couldn't resell it to me because their POS wouldn't scan it - wound up having to sell me a new phone from in-store). And because the e-receipt given to you by Walmart doesn't include the IMEI/SN of the phone you won't be able to get it fixed by AT&T.

Followed the instructions, using an inactive t-mobile sim and powering on the device, then requesting the unlock from att.

Got this from them this morning:

Check your unlock status
Current status - Denied
We can't unlock this device because it hasn't been active for at least six months of paid service.

You can submit a new request after six months of paid service.
why did you put a tmobile chip and power on first? shake head

I got denied also, I never even opened the box. I waited until I got home to request the unlock code. It was about 2 hours. Probably should have requested it in the parking lot. Guess this phone is going to be traded into Best Buy now.

You have to submit the unlock request before powering on the phone while it's still sealed in the box. I ended up going to pick both of mine up last night and submitted the unlock requests around 9PM last night and about 20 min ago got the two e-mails saying the unlocks were approved, both phones are still sealed. This is how I always do it with AT&T and so far 100% of the time they approve the unlock for me.

That is weird, are you an AT&T customer? I'm not, not sure if that makes a difference.

I did exactly the same, phone is still in sealed package. However I confirmed the request 6:00pm yesterday, still nothing came back. Don't feel lucky ...

No, I have Tmobile. I selected non att customer and used a Google voice number, just like someone had previously posted. That person got their unlock approved.

I have T-Mobile too, I just put that I'm not an AT&T customer and used my normal phone number and e-mail on both requests. I have used my Google Voice number in the past but didn't this time.

Just placed an order at $169. Then went back to check the item and the price went up to $249! Planning to try the unlock with ATT. If it doesn't work, will return the unopened phone.

After I picked up my phone yesterday evening I submitted an att unlock request (non customer) a few hours later. I got the confirmation email and clicked the confirm link. I have not received any other emails from them but just checked the status with the link in the confirmation email and it says unlock denied, need 6 month service etc. I never took the phone out of the box. It's still sealed. I didn't sign up for a plan in the store either.
Now I'm trying to figure out what to do. I plan to use the phone on cricket for some time but plan to switch to visible eventually (is is for my in-laws and we are all on a cricket family deal with about 6 month credit from refill card deals). Should I just plop the cricket sim in and enjoy it while on cricket? Or use an old att sim first? Or use a Verizon sim, get it locked for 60 days and start using it on cricket after that (since Verizon will Auto Unlock at that point)? If I use it with cricket, will it allow unlock in 6 month?
Or maybe the unlock denied message is because the phone really isn't marked as sold yet for att because the Walmart clerk didn't scan it properly?

My brother ordered two yesterday and they canceled his order today. I'm going to go to the store with him and show them that it was $165 and see if the manager will do an override, I saw someone else on this thread that was able to do that.

Verizon would auto-unlock after 60 days even though it's locked to AT&T? I would just use it on Cricket. Hard to say why they approve the unlock for some and deny it for others, makes no sense at all.

If the phone is on flex policy, the first carrier wins and you need to reach out to T-Force on Twitter to unlock it.
I got in on the iPhone Xs Max deal from Jan 2021 for $200 for my daughter and it is on the Flex policy so it's locked to TMo now since that's the 1st sim card we put in it and that's who our carrier is. I've called customer care and they say they can't unlock it because I didn't get it from them, obviously Walmart can't unlock it. Should I reach out to T-Force on Twitter?

For those who successfully unlocked through the att portal, will they text the number you entered. If a random google voice number won't work I might need to use somebody else's number which is not with att…

I submitted an unlock request on the AT&T portal using the IMEI number on an unopened box and a Google Voice phone number. I received this response:

----
Subject: We can't complete your unlock request right now

Looks like the information we need isn't in our database yet.
Device IMEI number: xxxxx
Request number: xxxxx

Hi xxxxx,

Wait a few days and then submit a new request when you're ready to try again.
----

Luckily, I'm in no hurry to start using the device. So I'll leave the box unopened and try again next week.
