Good phone. Being in bed with AT&T? Not so good

WARNING PSA

Having gone through a literal 6 hour ordeal in my local Walmart store...these are not always shipped properly activated when purchased online. My first order went absolutely fine, but the second turned into a nightmare (AT&T suspended the line after a day, citing a point-of-purchase error). The local store should be able to fix it, however it's not a guarantee (in my case they returned the phone but couldn't resell it to me because their POS wouldn't scan it - wound up having to sell me a new phone from in-store). And because the e-receipt given to you by Walmart doesn't include the IMEI/SN of the phone you won't be able to get it fixed by AT&T.

My initial unlock request was denied within a day due to not having fulfilled the 6 month requirement. I then submitted another request this past Friday. This morning I received an email stating that the needed information isn't yet in their database and I should try again in a few days. I guess that means they can't unlock because they haven't seen the phone on their network yet?
Since I'm planning to give this phone to my father in law for use on Cricket I will just proceed without it being unlocked as it should work just fine on Cricket in its out of the box state. Then I will try to submit a new request in the future (don't need it unlocked for about six months as we have Cricket credit from gift card deals so won't switch until that's used up).
I got the same email today.
Quick question: If the phone is activated and used on Cricket wireless for 6 months, can an unlock be requested from Cricket? Will it be an issue later because the phone is not originally from Cricket?

The same thing happened to me... denied last week with the same 6 month reason, so I tried submitting again and received an email that the phone is not yet in the database. I submitted a 3rd request to see if I get lucky and get an approval this time. Fortunately, I happen to use AT&T Prepaid, so I can always just temporarily put my SIM card in the phone so it shows up on the AT&T network and then request the unlock in 6 months if I really have to.

Update: My 3rd request was denied.

Walmart guy "activating" the phone is just part of the buying process to make sure you didn't steal the phone
Does it mean the 6-month activation clock starts on the day the phone is activated? In other words, if were to just keep it in the box for 6 months, will it be considered to have been on their network for 6 months and then activated on request?

I think it counts from the day you put the ATT sim in and turn it on. They probably require that it is on the network somewhat regularly rather than just once but who knows. I have had good luck with a couple of iPhone 6 from Best Buy years ago that were sold as att prepaid for $200 each. My in-laws used them on cricket right out of the box and just for fun I requested unlocks and they were granted. I don't know what the policy was back then and I don't remember how long I waited but I'm pretty sure it was less than 6 months. I never put the att prepaid sim in.

Finally received the email. I'm out of luck. Unlocking was denied... It really seems YMMV

I'm on the AT&T Prepaid $300 12 month plan, and I did the deal a while back to get the iPhone SE for $149 with activation of a new plan. I already had an iPhone 12 Pro, but I wanted a spare phone. I activated a new plan and immediately took the new SIM out and canceled AutoPay. I simply took the SIM that I was using in my iPhone 12 Pro and inserted it in to the iPhone SE to make a quick phone call about once every 1-2 months. At the 6 month mark, I requested the unlock, and it was approved very quickly. Not sure if it was necessary to insert my SIM card periodically, but I definitely didn't use the iPhone SE regularly.

You have to submit the unlock request before powering on the phone while it's still sealed in the box. I ended up going to pick both of mine up last night and submitted the unlock requests around 9PM last night and about 20 min ago got the two e-mails saying the unlocks were approved, both phones are still sealed. This is how I always do it with AT&T and so far 100% of the time they approve the unlock for me.
Do you select non ATT customer? I have att prepaid connection.

Are ATT customers having better luck with the unlock? I have a post-paid unlimited plan with ATT but bought this phone for someone else to use.

I bought 3 phones, 2 for people on the postpaid account, and one for non-AT&T. All the phones were denied for not having 6 months of service regardless of using my phone number or using the non-AT&T number.

Thanks! I just submitted an unlock request as a non-ATT customer. let's see how it goes. If denied, I'll sell on FB or just return to Walmart. I believe we have until Jan 9 to do so.

I've done two unlock requests now, spaced over one week apart - no joy. Both times the response was

" Looks like the information we need isn't in our database yet"

Seems like nothing will happen until the phone is activated, which will almost assuredly lead to outright denial.

If anyone has any ideas before I take this back, please do share, thank you!

Will AT&T honor device activation and unlocks if you purchased service through Red Pocket?

In my experience, not with iPhones. I tried with with ATT Prepaid iPhone SE 2016 and 6S.

I've purchased two ATT Prepaid Android phones (Huawei Ascend XT2 and LG Xpressions Plus), both unlocked with 6 months of Red Pocket Service.
