Ordered last week from Amazon for $106. Returned. Much easier to use chefschoice sharpener. YMMV if you want adjustable angle and want to spend a bunch of time practicing technique with this 'tool'.

This is for the grinding attachment, not the actual work sharp tool itself. I went back and forth about this and the chefs choice. Thanks for the feedback!

I don't own this but have read that this a must have if you own the Work Sharp Ken Onion sharpener. Keep in mind that if you're doing ANY blade sharpening you want to practice on crap knives first and learn technique. Also QUICK passes as you will screw up the heat treat on knives if you don't. This especially goes for if you're sharpening the final edge. You might want to also look on bladeforums about how to do this and look into dampening the grinding belt a bit with some water spray to keep that final edge from heating sky high temps momentarily thereby ruining the heat treat on the very edge. You won't be able to notice this by hand but it's been documented with slowmo cameras and heat sensing cameras.

Are these any good? I have some Kohl's cash to spend:

I've used a different, decently reviewed model from Amazon. It works, but for a few blades it ended up putting chips in the blade. They were not the best blades, but I definitely won't use my model on my nice knives. It was $13, obviously it was not the best. I'm sure one you move up in price they get better. I think it would be worth a shot for basic knives where you're not focused on the sharpening angle and just want a sharp blade

I ordered the ken onion deal and will try that for my better blades, but it is pricey.

Those manual pull through ones vary. Some are carbide v scrapers that leave a terrible edge, some are round wheels that have diamond grit and are supposed to rotate as you pull. I find them smoother but time consuming as they don't take much off.

I bought a plug in chefs one years ago...only the final stage is powered ceramic hone.. disappointed in the outcome and generally take out one of my stones then final on the powered ceramic hone section.

Dress with use on on a furi diamond finger type seems to work better and self adjusts to the knife angle (mostly).

As to the belts and heat and hardness... I am not a knife maker yet, but know several and have been on bladeforums.... There are some very smart and experienced individuals on there, but like many sites there are a contingent that argue irrelevant points down to minutia.

Keep the blade cool, as long as there is no color change in the steel it's fine.

I have had a Chef's Choice for years, but have been really hesitant to use on my nicer blades and didn't want to put a different edge on them. I got the Amazon $106 deal too and practiced on about 10 blades of all kinds at my brothers as he has cheaper knives and found the Ken Onion without the additional attachment incredibly easy to use after watching a few Youtube videos...

As someone who collects knives and have been sharpening for over 20 years, please trust me and I tell you to stay away from this thing. It takes a lot of skill to use and it will eat through your knives. If you want a sharp knife and make them last, by high-quality hand sharpeners and learn to do it by hand.

I already had the standard Ken Onion and didn't like the blade guides much. I like this belt system a lot more. Highly recommended if you are a knife geek!

Having both, I agree that this is a significant improvement over the standard belt system wtih the guides that comes with the Ken Onion. I highly recommend it.

I have had about 4 different brands of powered knife sharpeners. The Ken onion is the best I have used. I can't stand dull knives and will usually put the finale edge on with a steel or fine grit belt. You can use the std unit in the same manner, you just won't have the use of the guides
