A contractor friend of mine, who always has a knife, bought me a benchmade a few years back. I keep it in my knapsack, but in all this time I might have used it half a dozen times...mainly to open boxes!

What do people use these folding knives for unless your hunting/camping?

So which is better for cutting?
I'm pretty sure OP was implying that the non-coated model is superior for actual work (i.e. it's better for cutting). This coated model is more of a collector's item.

Ah, you sound like a knife collector already. Most people buy them because they appreciate the craftsmanship, and fidget factor. Some are steel nerds and appreciate different steels.

Try carrying it in your pocket, you'll find dozens of uses for it once you get used to having it. I use my flipper to open packages and envelopes, pry things apart, cut loose threads in clothing, clean my fingernails, and on and on. That's just the everyday stuff. There's also the self defense element. It's just useful for most any human to have a sharp piece of strong steel on their person. It's the most basic and useful tool there is.

I have an extensive collection and Benchmades are solid but for this price I would go with a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 or 3.

I bought a 940-1 as one of my first nice knives. It really is great, and I fell down the rabbit hole too. The blade is a bit long for some places(legally). That's why they made the newer one with a 3in blade. I also feel the the blade stock is a bit thick, the bugout for instance is much slicier. Other than that, it does cut well, fits in the hand and pocket nicely, and is very smooth opening with a pretty high figet factor. I agree with a previous comment, you should get a deep carry clip for it. Benchmade will send you one free just for asking.

Protech > Benchmade & Spyderco
Right but the Spyderco and Benchmade are comparable products playing in the same part of the market.
