I picked up 3 small cutting boards and a sharpener this time around. The prices on the knives aren't as great as last time, especially compared to the Kaji initial price mistakes last time.

$50 at Shun (Warehouse products with possible imperfections, no warranty, non-returnable) vs. $79.95 at Amazon (new normal product).
Taking all the above into account the discounts are pretty underwhelming.

For those Japanese blades, boards made of mid-soft woods are recommended. the popular kinds widely used in their homeland, Japan, are Ginkgo, Magnolia, Hinoki (includes Hiba), Willow, Kaya (Torreya), etc. The problem is, a cutting board made of softer (but not too soft) woods is rarely seen in the US market and would be expensive even if you could find it. Probably the most affordable choice that is also easier to find in the US would be Hinoki. I would highly recommend an edge grain board to last your brittle Japanese blades longer. A rubber cutting board is another excellent choice. Keep your Japanese blades away from traditional butcher blocks, harder wood boards, bamboo (affordable but would damage and wear your Shun blades quickly), plastics, and stones, if possible.

It doesn't say anything on the Shun site about not sharpening warehouse items.
Shoot, I have that knife and it's the most versatile in the product line.

SORRY, when actually trying to buy, it says "out of stock". Stupid vendors, why put an "Add to Cart" button only to get your hopes high...
