Also anyone know how long this $50 discount on the 5a is going to be offered?

EDIT: I found it good through Dec 26th.

Apple is as bad - and apparently signed a secret deal with the Chinese government.

Samsung disables eSIM functionality on their flagship models (and claims it's because the carriers won't allow it - although Google and Apple seem to be able to persuade the carriers).

Motorola's only eSIM offering is the razr - and it's single sim to boot.

So who should I buy from, if I'm looking for 5G / dual sim with eSim?

Decided to buy one with $320 trade-in value for an iPhone XR. Too bad I had to pay tax on the full $400.

Would have gotten the Pixel 6 but I think the crappy fingerprint reader would ruin the joy of it for me.... so hopefully this 5a will hold me over until Google fixes the problems with the 6 and 6 Pro (6 Pro adds the problem of a curved screen in addition to the crappy fingerprint reader). Maybe the 6a or Pixel 7 will get it right.

Decided to buy this case for it:

After the couple of updates, the in screen fingerprint reader has gotten a helluva lot better. Just have to be careful to place thumb exactly right to unlock. Works first try for logging into apps every time. So I guess the " extra protection" algorithm is only for lock screen.

If you're looking into Google fi you can get it for $9/mo with a phone subscription for 2 years:
https://fi.google.com/about/phones/pixel-5a-5g

It shows as $15/mo with device protection but I was able to deselect the $6/mo device protection.
Yep, saw that - but it's tied with a 2 year subscription and you'd need to have at least the $20 plan (even if you don't use data); that makes it $696 for 2 years without data; or if you use a small amount of data (1 GB or less) - that's $936.

Contrast it with $399 upfront + $192 = $591 for unlimited talk and text for 24 months on Tello (same T-mo coverage); or with 1GB data per month : 399+240 = $639 on Tello, or 399+200 = 599 on Boost's new 1 GB annual plan.

FI makes more sense if you use a lot more data AND have consistent overseas travel (having data overseas without having to pay extra for roaming or the hassle of a second sim).

I added the detail of the promo offer as a possible plus. The subscription offer makes reasonable sense for someone who wants to switch into FI and stay for a couple of years; the promo offer is for someone who wants to try it out, but not necessarily decided about staying.

Maybe you've heard of Huawei...

Anyways, I believe Google store benefits from 10% off for Google One subscribers.

Would ruin it for me too.
While the XR isn't a bad phone the Pixel 5a should last longer & I'm more of an Android user than Apple ( I was also able get one of the ST iPhone 12 Mini's for cheap the other day & activated it on my TF account).

Ironically a Pixel and then root it with CalyxOS.org. I did that for my P3 and P4. I'll never go back to using stock Android because Calyx along with Lineage and others are perfectly fine sans Google, and you still get your dual SIM, good camera, etc

Saw a promo offer on the same page - if you are new to FI, you can get 3 months of the unlimited plus plan for free (redemption code sent through email; need to activate within 30 days). Limit one per new plan user; can't get it if you left FI within the last 180 days.
Does that 3 month promo offer have to be used on the 5a phone -- or could it be taken advantage of on another phone? Can I port an existing number into Fi (from Cricket)?

One more question, does the trade-in phone have to be unlocked?
