It's a trade off, depends on the space you have, what sort of seating arrangement, what content you watch etc. If you are mainly looking to watch SDR TV and sports in a large room with limited light and mostly central seating, then this could be a good choice. I'd personally be looking for a better quality 55 at this price or lower with better HDR performance and possibly wider viewing angles. You should be able to get FALD and quantum dot at this price in a 55 (and sometimes 65, like the recurring hisense U6GR deal) inch size.

anyone know how wide the distance between the stands are?
I saw that the width of the tv itself is around 62 inches, so I figure that the stands are about 53-55 inches apart.

Will this be at least as good as last years $150 walmart 55" TCL? If I'm happy enough with that, obviously not a very PQ discerning viewer, just if that extra 15 inches is going to exacerbate its flaws.

Personally I'd go with the Samsung. Looking at the rtings review for both of them they look pretty similar but they note the TCL has noticeable motion blur while the Samsung just has poorer colors. Personally for me the motion blur is a no go but ymmv
