Amazon M1 is only 8gb RAM at the price point you mentioned.

This i5 is a good deal to support multiple monitors or running Windows in Bootcamp or VMware. M1 only supports one external.
haha you tell 'em
Some still don't understand the M1 is limited

This is a great deal for people who need bootcamp. No m1 can do that. Period.
Only reason to buy these at this point, but a windows laptop in this price range will have definitely better specs (usually while being much more upgradable) so not sure who these are really for. I bought a G4 powerbook in 2006 as I thought I was getting an awesome deal, that was the worst mac purchase I ever made as Apple quickly abandoned them. Same is going to happen to these last gen Intel macbook orphans.

How is it a bad deal? It is $700 off the original price. Sure it is not the M1 chip but the specs are still pretty decent when macbooks usually only get $100-$200 discount.

Get this if you can find one for $700/$800. It is still capable machine. Currently running Monterey on it. It runs fine with some other apps. You probably don't want things less than 512GB. Memory is good to have 16GB. I'd get this over M1 model since M1 can only do 1 x external monitor. That is a deal breaker for me. Not sure you care but I need a min of 2 x external monitors.
Is M1 pro or M1 max good enough for you?

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank gtg465x

FYI to those comparing this to an M1 Air… this has a 25% brighter screen, twice as many ports, better speakers, a Touch Bar, a larger trackpad, and support for more external displays. The more appropriate comparison is to the 13-inch Pro with M1, which is literally the exact same computer with an M1 instead of an i5. That one with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD is $1579 in the EDU store, $1699 regular, so you will be paying at least $480 more just for the M1 with all else being equal.

I do think the M1 Air would be a better choice than this for many people, but I just wanted to make people aware of the differences and that the M1 Air is not as good in some ways.

This is a tough decision . Lots of good MacBook prices being posted recently . I have an 2017 MacBook Pro 16gb ram , and I'm struggling not to update to this model since it uses the same Intel processor . With the lastest MacBook OS upgate my MacBook has been running extremely crappy , and the fan comes on quiete frequently .

Your macbook has 14nm kaby lake cpu. This one is 10nm ice lake, it's actually a pretty nice upgrade. I know because I had this macbook. Problem is the M1's have made these obsolete if you're using macos exclusively. Unless you need bootcamp or you're running intel VM's, then buying this to save a few hundred bucks isn't good for the long haul. The intel GPU in these is pretty slow too so these aren't so great for bootcamp either.

Smaller SSD and only 8GB of RAM (although apparently with the M1 you don't need as much RAM), but the current model M1 MacBook Pro is only $150 more than this:

Look at how many replies you have in this thread. Maybe that will tell you.

For now, but in the foreseeable future it's the intel that will be SEVERLY limited, just like the powerpc's
