Definitely not instructor replacement, but if he's into we'll invest in an instructor in the new future.
FYI, the usb-midi port and the headphone ports are not isolated so you get weird feedback when using an iPad for simply piano.

Got this keyboard last year for my kid for the same reason, stuff to during covid lockdown. Got the Simply Piano subscription and it's working out pretty great so far. Low entry if it doesn't pan out. Lots of fun songs that he likes.

Even if you're a beginner, one of the first things you learn in your first piano lessons is the need to play with dynamics (loud and soft)and be conscious about how much pressure you're applying to your keys.
The piano was a game changer when it was first invented because of its ability to play with dynamics, bringing a whole new level of expression.
IMHO the use case for this is as more of a beater, low stress purchase for someone who already has some experience playing and wants to play non-real instrument sounds equally loud. (Ie Synth sounds). Or you really want to play harpsichord.
For this price there are also better choices if you want to use as a controller for GarageBand.

For anyone who is thinking about learning to play the piano. Don't, this is a bad keyboard to learn on. You want something with weighted keys, decent action, and absolutely with 88 keys.
giving this a try to see if he is interested in piano. if not it's thrown away investment. if interested, i'll spend the 10x money and buy the costcco one.
