Villainous is a bit more complicated, rules-wise, but it's relatively simple once everyone understands what they're doing. I understand why it would seem overwhelming for people who don't have much experience with board games outside of the classics (Monopoly, Clue, etc) so I wouldn't recommend playing it with kids under 10.

Sidekicks has somewhat simple rules but the game is just unfair as it relentlessly throws obstacles at you to prevent you from completing your goals. Since it's a cooperative game, it'll be a test of patience as you all repeatedly get destroyed by the game.

If you want a more enjoyable cooperative experience with your kids, I would suggest looking into Horrified, Mice and Mystics, Stuffed Fables, Magic Maze, Escape: The Curse of the Temple, or Ghost Fightin' Treasure Hunters.

This is all time low price according to 3c

No BGG score, but the reviews aren't so good on this one.
Might be a pass even at this price

Fair warning, this game is ridiculously difficult. Do not recommend getting it for your kids. Don't be fooled by the kid-friendly Disney theme.

Yes, I was going to get the game because we like cooperative games, but I read a review on Board game geek that changed my mind.

Is it worse than Disney's Villains? I read the rules twice and saw a couple of videos, and didn't know how to start

I bought the whole Villains set last year ... we played twice and never opened it up again. I hear great things about it, but it wasn't my family's cup of tea.

Guess I'll give this a quick "no" based on the comments here.

Ahhh very informative response. Thanks

I've played long Catan games before, and winning it was such an accomplishment.

I understand that the gameplay for sidekicks was difficult, but the real question is, do you get a satisfying win, or does it just feel like work?

Both? I mean it does feel good to finally come up with the right strategy to beat it, but to get to that point requires a lot of trial and error and some alpha gaming (one player telling others what their best actions are) so it ultimately does feel like work still. And that's not taking into account the constant feeling of hopelessness that might make you give up entirely.

There are other games that allow you to change the difficulty (Horrified for example) to get that same sense of accomplishment in a much smoother way where you slowly learn the tricks to all the monsters before throwing them into the same game. It doesn't feel as hopeless there because you will definitely win most of the games as you work your skills up to that point.

Ohh I have to avoid the games prone to alpha gaming. Thanks for all your advice. I'll check out the other games

Dice Tower review

Also, great games we've been playing as a family lately (kids are 8-11 years):

Age of War
Catan Junior
Century Golem Edition
Dungeon Mayhem
Exploding Minions
Here to Slay
King of Tokyo
Unmatched

FWIW, supporting characters, like Lumiere and Abu, would expect to have a hard time up against powerful sorcerers like Jafar and Malificent. I appreciate the game's ultra-realism approach. /s

Yeah, the reviews look pretty bad for this one. Doesn't appeal to the hardcore board gaming crowd, and looks far too difficult for kids or casual gamers. Pass.

I am right there with you! Got the Villains games last year for Christmas and too confusing to even play.
