I'll never forget the video of when they announced the first Apple Pencil and right when the speaker said, "We call it Apple Pencil," the whole auditorium started laughing. The look on the guy's face was priceless, and he had no idea what to do, because he was clearly expecting the usual Apple fan cheering. If you haven't seen that video, go find it on YouTube. It's pretty funny.

does the 1st generation one ever go on sale at all? it's the only one that will work with my older model iPad, and I figured once the 2nd gen came out i'd be able to get a 1st for cheap. doesn't seem to be the case though.

Yes first gen does go on sale. It was $80 during Black Friday. Amazon still has it for $80 right now.
