I'll never forget the video of when they announced the first Apple Pencil and right when the speaker said, "We call it Apple Pencil," the whole auditorium started laughing. The look on the guy's face was priceless, and he had no idea what to do, because he was clearly expecting the usual Apple fan cheering. If you haven't seen that video, go find it on YouTube. It's pretty funny.

does the 1st generation one ever go on sale at all? it's the only one that will work with my older model iPad, and I figured once the 2nd gen came out i'd be able to get a 1st for cheap. doesn't seem to be the case though.

I just watched it. It was more a chuckle than mocking laughter.
I've had plenty of experience with both Pencils. imo, the first version was absurd - such an "un-Apple" type of product, particularly in the way it inelegantly stuck out of the iPad's lightning port for charging. The Pencil 2 is the one they should've released to begin with. Magnetic attachment & charging just make so much more sense than the tenuous physical connection of the first version. The secondary function (double-tap) is nice, but it's really the attachment/charging that sold me on the newer model. That said, while I'm no artist, functionally - at least for my purposes - they're more or less the same.
Not affiliated with product but for 1/3rd the price, it works fine for my meeting notes.
Interesting. Does it function just like an Apple Pencil? If you start handwriting in any text field, will the iPad convert it to text (the feature Apple calls "Scribble")? I thought only the OEM Apple product would have that kind of functionality, but maybe I'm misinformed. Wouldn't be the first time.

Yes it works so far. That is the iPad feature I believe and not Pencil related. Except the double tap features all works fine.
My only complain battery life: 100% - not 12 hrs as product claims. Since Chinese product, my realistic expectation was 6 hrs but it only worked so far like 3-6 hrs max. Hard to check for accurate usage.

Why $100 pencil is a slick deal?
