The S501 is hooked up to RP-8000F's and a SVS SB12-NSD. It has an older AT turntable and 5 disk CD changer as sources. I've been looking into a better turntable but am not yet prepared to sell a kidney to fund the purchases. D:
For me, I was trying to find a premium stereo on the lower cost side and the Yamaha's had more features than most everything else I looked at and were cheaper. I've been really happy with both. Plenty of inputs. Easy to adjust Bass and Treble that doesn't involve diving into a menu. The only real complaint I have is you have to "wake" it from Standby using the remote. I don't think there's any way to wake it from the amp itself other than turning it off and back on.
I payed nearly this much for a the S501. They seldom go on much of a sale.

I own this amd love it for my daily driver for vinyl. I do have an external phono preamp, and haven't ever plugged into the onboard so can't judge it specifically, but the amp itself sounds stunning powering my Ohm Walsh 2000s in the living room and simple wharfdale diamond iii bookies in my office.
By all means go deep on audiophile gear, it's fun, but this is entirely respectable for even the geekiest among them in a blind test.
Cheers.

Personally, I think it's a very solid two channel offering in this budget. Possibly even one of the best (reliability is as you would expect - absolutely solid).

If that's not worth it to you either, then just get the 701 which has the same amps as the 801 without the usb nonsense.
I mainly play 320kbps mp3's on my phone to a chromecast audio connected to the optical input with pure direct on. Speakers are the polk lsim 705's and a pair of svs1000s. I usually keep the door closed on my av console and it only gets mildly warm, unlike my old onkyo which would get screaming hot.
Sounds great, looks great, good tactile knobs. I'd get one again (or a 701) in a heartbeat.
