first i would buy something for $1000 and check to see if you get $1500 back. if not, return the item and get a refund; walk away. if so, rinse and repeat; rinse and repeat.
the amex offer has two steps. you are given an offer and if you accept it, you add it to your card. next, you trigger that offer by making a qualified purchase. however, you are in no way obligated to execute on the deal and you can allow it to expire. it's up to you. i know what i would do.
