Did a quick search and I don't see this getting posted yet. It seemed like Metro by T Mobile is currently having a port in deal for iPhone SE (2nd gen) right now. Phone is free but it requires you to port in with non T-Mo number, enroll in the $60 plan + $20 activation fee. The best thing about this deal is that the terms don't seem to require you to pay for 2 or 3 months ahead of time. So, in the best case scenario, you can actually walk away with a new iPhone SE for just $80 + tax. Also, unless things have changed, the phone should be unlocked automatically after 6 months with the infamous "drawer trick".

Most SD'ers are probably pretty familiar with how Metro works by now. All Metro deals are in store only and some stores require ID verification (some may even verify the age of your port in number and other things). It is also best to go to Corporate stores rather than Authorized dealers since they frequently charge you tax on full price + adding bogus fees (like forcing you to buy insurance and overpriced accessories).

Edit: They also have iPhone XR for $50 extra (total = $130 or more depending on what other things the store forced you to pay).

and before anyone ask....

to have phone unlock in 180 days (6 months)

u need to have activated the phone 180 days ago.

u do not. repeat do NOT have to pay for service for 180 days.

the above has been true for most every metro deal in the past.
it is extremely likely true for this deal as well

if it sounds odd...its probably made up

It is actually really simple. After you get the phone from Metro, set up a Metro account on their website. You don't really need to fill in any additional personal information. Just make sure autopay is off and remove your credit card info if possible. After one month, they will suspend your service since you don't pay for the 2nd month of service. After that, you can let the phone sits for 5 more months, and it will automatically unlock (No need to send in a unlock request).

If you want, you can use the phone on Wifi during those 5 months. Though, I cannot comment whether using Rsim, etc. will affect the unlock process since I always let Metro phones sat in my drawer for 6 months to get them unlocked.
Ebay number is rather expensive nowadays even if it works. Personally, I think the best way to get a port in number is either through Visible BYOD or do their swap deal because it only costs you $5 with referral (Unfortunately, phone numbers from MVNOs like Ting, Tello, etc. won't work even though they are typically cheaper because they are all using T-Mo network). You can also get a Tracfone sim and load with the cheapest plan ($1 for the sim kit and $10 for plan I think) to get a Tracfone number. Just make sure you activate either the Verizon or ATT sim though.

About the port in line account age, some stores check but some stores don't. When I did the OnePlus Nord N10 deal last year, all I needed to do was to give them the port in info and they didn't ask any question. On the other hand, some people mentioned that Metro actually called the number to verify the number is active or called the carrier to confirm account age. All I can say is YMMV.

Officially, you need 6 months of service to get the phone unlocked, but based on past experience, phones always get unlocked 6 months after activation even if you stop using Metro service after the first month.

However, since they can change this anytime they want so nobody really knows until 6 months later.

I always just let them suspended my service after the first month. You will probably have to wait for someone who is more knowledgeable on this topic for an answer.
How recent was that? My most recent unlock was a OnePlus Nord 10 5G around mid-August. Paid only for 1 month of service and then let the phone sat in drawer for 5 more months. After that, all I needed to do was to connect the phone to wifi and use the included unlock app to get the phone unlocked.

I have been following Metro deals for a few years and almost everyone got their phones unlocked after 6 months even without an active account.

Edit: That's my experience with port in deals. If you are upgrading phones, I have no idea how it works.

Thread from the N10 5G Metro deals back then. There is a huge wiki at the beginning.

Thank you for sharing! I am looking for an iPhone SE (2nd Gen) or a similar iPhone just to use as an iPod music player, so I'm very interested in this deal. If anyone has input about it, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Take care,
Tofu Vic

Thank you for sharing. Repped.

Honest question since I am not familiar with it: would you mind giving a quick rundown of the "drawer trick"?

Ideally would love to have this iPhone unlocked as quickly (and cheaply) as possible. Thanks!

To do 2 lines, do I need to port two numbers, or would 1 port-in be fine?
