It is actually really simple. After you get the phone from Metro, set up a Metro account on their website. You don't really need to fill in any additional personal information. Just make sure autopay is off and remove your credit card info if possible. After one month, they will suspend your service since you don't pay for the 2nd month of service. After that, you can let the phone sits for 5 more months, and it will automatically unlock (No need to send in a unlock request).

If you want, you can use the phone on Wifi during those 5 months. Though, I cannot comment whether using Rsim, etc. will affect the unlock process since I always let Metro phones sat in my drawer for 6 months to get them unlocked.

Ebay number is rather expensive nowadays even if it works. Personally, I think the best way to get a port in number is either through Visible BYOD or do their swap deal because it only costs you $5 with referral (Unfortunately, phone numbers from MVNOs like Ting, Tello, etc. won't work even though they are typically cheaper because they are all using T-Mo network). You can also get a Tracfone sim and load with the cheapest plan ($1 for the sim kit and $10 for plan I think) to get a Tracfone number. Just make sure you activate either the Verizon or ATT sim though.

About the port in line account age, some stores check but some stores don't. When I did the OnePlus Nord N10 deal last year, all I needed to do was to give them the port in info and they didn't ask any question. On the other hand, some people mentioned that Metro actually called the number to verify the number is active or called the carrier to confirm account age. All I can say is YMMV.

Officially, you need 6 months of service to get the phone unlocked, but based on past experience, phones always get unlocked 6 months after activation even if you stop using Metro service after the first month.

However, since they can change this anytime they want so nobody really knows until 6 months later.

I always just let them suspended my service after the first month. You will probably have to wait for someone who is more knowledgeable on this topic for an answer.

How recent was that? My most recent unlock was a OnePlus Nord 10 5G around mid-August. Paid only for 1 month of service and then let the phone sat in drawer for 5 more months. After that, all I needed to do was to connect the phone to wifi and use the included unlock app to get the phone unlocked.

I have been following Metro deals for a few years and almost everyone got their phones unlocked after 6 months even without an active account.

Edit: That's my experience with port in deals. If you are upgrading phones, I have no idea how it works.

Thread from the N10 5G Metro deals back then. There is a huge wiki at the beginning.

No, they are still shady. They are better described as sleazy authorized dealers.

Do you know how many times you can open and close lines with Metro ? I have opened and closed lines 2 times this year ?
Is there a limit ?

PS: Everyone corporate stores are better but my experience is Corp Stores are horrible ( in my area - I am in Maryland - Silver Spring, MD is the only Corporate Store).
Going to a dealer and paying $10 more on other junk they charge you is a much easier option as you can cancel them all when you come home instead of dealing with Corporate employees.

For anyone who needs a new phone number (especially if your already on TMobile/metro) you can buy a new number on eBay for $10-$15 just ask the seller not to send you inactive or TMobile/metro numbers.

I've purchased a few (thinking 3) phones from Metro on their deals and corporate stores have been excellent with no additional like activation fee, tax was much lower vs dealers, and port was fast. I'm in Walnut Creek, CA so your mmv.

I ported over for their $500 gifted promo for 2 numbers. I'm in my third month. Think I'm only meeting $500-600 because of their crazy fees. So yea, I agree it's not worth it.

Same experience, corporate stores were still shady and charged me random fees and services and didn't tell me abut it in store. I think authorized retailers would charge even more fees and slip a ton of unwanted services in there as well.

Probably worse after covid. I have always wanted to do these boost and metro deals but those shady reps keep me away.

I have been inside their stores before and the lies they tell customers is alarming. I remember at one boost store one of the managers kept saying I had to get the highest rate plan, insurance and accessories or else he wouldn't do the deal.

Be alert if you go to these stores. Try to go to a corp store

And the top 3 carriers aren't any better. I've had reps add insurance to lines when I didn't ask for it. They also push 'free' accessories only for unsuspecting customers seeing monthly charges for that 'free' speaker, tempered glass, case etc…

I did the N10 and N 100 deal January 2021 and was pretty good to get 2 phones for about $100, both unlocked after 6 months. In my area there are no corporate stores so I went with the best authorized store based on reviews on Google maps and it worked out for me
