People were talking about their line of routers earlier in a different post if you want to see some discussion: https://slickdeals.net/share/ipad_app/fp/686743. I bought this router at 18 and waiting for it to arrive. It seems to still show $18 for me at Amazon right now. Good luck everyone.

I picked up three at around $15 each. Trying to be replacing some aging hardware at Grandma's house.

So there's no way to know which version you are purchasing?

Used ones for $17 now with those sold.

These used ones may be the slower v2s that were returned, but with OP's being a v3, could just be a luck of the draw thing.

Doesn't appear to have mesh support if that's what some people are looking for.

I have the V2 of this router. It's great. The V3 took a turn for the worse. Firmware makes it completely useless

Which firmware? Netgear or open source?

I've never tried open source. But net gear really neutered the v3 version. I can easily get over 100mbps on the v2 but the v3 would constantly have speed issues and speed drops and connection issues.

Should I get the R6700 or AX4? Some people said the AX4 isn't too stable. I have been using my R6700 v1 for many years. It has been doing well.

I've been using one of these for 5 plus years. Got for $120 on sale at Costco. Version 1. Put DD-WRT a couple months after I got it an havent had an issue. Only thing I notice is sometime when my phone does wifi calling its cuts out. Doesn't bother me enough to really look into the issue.

back at $17. yes v3 is still a workable router. it was very good back in 2013 (the r6300v2 and the ac1450 are basically the same thing with slightly lower speed stepping of the SoC), but nowadays i recommend against it. no open source support exists for Broadcom chips and it will never exist. there are workable DD-WRT builds (that i helped to debug) but they will never work well because the drivers are aging buggy binary blobs and cannot be fixed. and Broadcom stopped publishing even proprietary drivers for these chips for the ARM arch a long while ago (and yes, this SoC is ARM).

truly open platforms like OpenWRT only support the 2.4GHz band on Broadcom, and only on B/G, and very buggy. there is no 5GHz, no 6GHz, no N, no AC, no AX, etc. and they are about to drop this outdated support completely.

TL;DR: don't buy anything Broadcom. many Qualcom Atheros and Mediatek SoCs are ok though. look into OpenWRT hardware support and buy only routers with good support on that project.

this family of routers in particular did not support virtual interfaces or virtual access points in DD-WRT for the last 5 years, until last week when i submitted a fix and now it works. they also do not support WDS, wireless distribution service (many routers repeating a net). it also seems wireless bridging is broken, so client bridge and repeater bridge modes do not work.

really, do yourself a favor, shell out a bit more and avoid Broadcom. you want something with >=64MB flash, >=256MB ram, and USB.

I have one of these, flashing DD-WRT will slow down your wired internet speed if your connection is over 300mbps. Apparently Netgear doesn't share the secret sauce needed to get 100% of the speed out of these things.

Just came through theforklift stream for $14.57, one in stock. They seem to come around this price pretty often though, so keep an eye out!

Post is for $13, so if it's jumped to $17 it is expired.
Still decent price. You can update your post.
