yes. but some companies charge a monthly "rental fee" for a cable modem or gateway (CM +AP or CM+AP+MTA). so the cable modem will pay for itself in a year.

Mine charges a fee of either $14 or $25 per month depending on equipment and data tiers. Some places still only charge $5 per month, I don't know if I've ever seen a cable company provide a cable modem or combo w/ wifi for free on any carrier.

Been using rbr50 for the last 2 years. Numerous times it has dropped internet connectivity to our laptops. First 2 times isp checked and confirmed it wasn't their issue. Now I am forced to reset the device every time I come across connectivity issues. Which means I have to reset few other devices at home that do not allow me to reconnect to the reset Wi-Fi even if the ssd is same for security reasons. Plus their app is very basic and many good to have features are on premium. Site blocking does not even work.

are you saying you have other APs using the same ssid as the orbi?

for what it's worth... i have the 1 base+2 satellite orbi rbk50 set from costco. have 30+ devices. 1 ssid for gaming and 1 ssid (guest) for general browsing/streaming. and 2 more networks/ssids (running off att uverse equipment) for TV. and my setup works great.

I've been using Voxel firmware. Have an RBR and three satellites. 30 devices, multiple 4k TVs. No drops at all.

Interesting. Is voxel worth messing with? I don't have any issues at all with my Orbi setup but I know some people do.

I just need one extender. Can I use both as extenders or just one?

There's a hacky way to turn a router (RBR) into a satellite (RBS), but I wouldn't recommend it. Can brick the unit.
