At least at Amazon you can say it's a gift and get a box.
If a site says "ships in original packaging" it is a shitshow on what that means. It can be the box itself, or, if you are lucky and it's a bigger set, it could mean you get the box LEGO ships it in to retailers. For the life of me I don't know why LEGO doesn't do that more often, those boxes fir perfectly and saves cardboard.
