They are moving away from OxygenOS into ColorOS. Make sure they have fixed all the bugs.

Thanks for straightening me out. I saw it mentioned and thought it was the 8T...was one of the things keeping me on the fence. The other is I'm on Mint and not sure if that would be enough for t-mobile to be able to unlock the t-mobile version.
I'm on MINT and I didn't have any problem UNLOCKING my OnePlus 8. You have to MAKE SURE YOU DON'T HAVE A SIM CARD IN IT AND ARE IN WIFI.
Just follow these instructions.

Unlocking

WITH SIM CARD OUT and CONNECTED TO WIFI here's a good step by step.

Its settings -> wifi & network -> Sim&network -> At the bottom "network unlock". I requested permanent unlock,

It might take a couple of minutes or even fail. If it does fail just do it again until it works

They release the 10 next month. That's why they're getting rid of all these 8 and 8t models.

Going to be ALOT MORE MONEY for the 10

I haven't had any issues with 8t

Unblocking bootloader and install custom rom is no easy task esp with 8t. Personally, I have dropped that plan. I usually install custom rom on day 1
can you share the video or tutorial that you followed in order to unlock the bootloader, I saw several on youtube, but I want and advice from a person that acctually own a op8t, thanks!

i paid 430 for this after having a lot of trouble applying discounts a few weeks ago. sure wish i coulda got this deal no strings. but oh well. oh and the silver was out of stock back then, which i'd rather have.

the t-mobile version is easily sim unlocked. you just click on unlock in the settings. im running it on red pocket att towers no problem although i did have to manually update the apn settings. still has the tmobile boot logo though. also not sure if there are any issues updating havent tried.

although that s21 tmobile 399 deal in the other sd thread is giving me slight buyers remorse, as the s21 is smaller which i wanted, overall i'm happy with this one for sure. i enjoy the flat screen. also 12/256 vs 8/128 for that one is nice for sure. but it is a step down from sd 888 to sd 865, that's not a big deal as 865 is plenty.
is not that easy to unlock on all the cases. Because for me the unlock sim on the settings didnt work, it was giving me the 255 error, that I was not candidate for the unlock.
Right now I have the device sim unlocked, but I had to try several times with the T-mobile tforce on Facebook to unlock the device.

I purchased the 8T+ (T-Mobile) on Dec 1, received it on Dec 15, and was not able to unlock it using the steps that have been given for unlocking the 8. I contacted T-Mobile and they said they didn't have the phone in their system and I would have to contact OnePlus. I contacted OnePlus customer support and they were beyond useless. They tried to tell me the phone had to be active for 40 days before it could be unlocked. I asked them to show me where that was documented and they continually ignored me. I believe that is the policy for boot-loader unlock but that is now what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to RMA the phone since I'm still in the 15 day window and after 2 days I'm still waiting on the information I need to send the phone back. I'm done with OnePlus after this horrible experience with their customer support.
Hey it was the same for me, I had to purchase a plan with T-Mobile, (45 usd), Right now I'm in Mexico, and even that the plan supose to work in Mx, the mobile data didnt work, so I created a Ticket with customer service (t-Force) and they unlock me the phone in about 2 days or less. I guess I got lucky just due to I am not in the USA right now. Maybe this information helps.

I spent an hour+ on the phone with T-Mobile support yesterday. I spoke with 2 different people and they both told me the same thing that I had been told before, that the IMEI for my 8T phone does not exist in their system. I went through the steps with them and explained each step of the way what I was seeing and I think they finally understood that my phone is locked to T-Mobile whether they see it in their system or not. They elevated my case to the network unlock (support?) team and told me that it would be 24-72 hours before I hear back from them. If what they are telling me is true then I wonder what would happen if I tried to activate the phone on the T-Mobile network? Without knowing how all of this works, it seems to be that OnePlus didn't do something on their end to get the IMEI put into the T-Mobile database before they sent the phone to me.

Yeah but some folks reported they couldn't get their 8t unlocked because it was not showing up in t-mobile's unlocker. Someone else theorized you'd actually have to be on their network to "register" for the unlock....and not sure if mint is sufficient. I'll wait. My op7pro is doing all I need although this is very tempting.

Why would you normally want the bootloader unlocked? For one you own the device and should have full access to it. Magisk for root. Magisk addon modules. Xposed Modules via LSPOSED Magisk Module. TWRP Recovery. Removal of Google Play Services and replaced with open source microG replacement. The list goes on.

Its easier to brick this phone . I was stuck using MSM tools and it wouldn't proceed. I see many others reporting similar issues with the tmobile variant

I think the oxygen rom is pretty good and with the phone specs it wouldn't make too much of a difference. I would highly recommend against modifying it. YMMV

Ps: I have rooted most of my phones on day 1 something in this made it feel a little too complex and not worth the risk. I will try again after one year of use

Be careful if you decide to trade-in your phone. OnePlus has poor customer service and their trade-in process is a big mess. I was warned and didn't listen. Just spreading the word. Good luck!

Probably do better to sell it on swappa.com. I'd check there first given they are only offering $120 for an op7pro. I thought about tradein but then was concerned they might "downgrade" my phone to some ridiculous amount when it already was what I consider barely worth doing.

If you look at the most recent AT&T whitelist (Dec 15) of devices that will still be allowed on their network after Feb 2022, the T-Mobile version of the 8T is not on that list. The model # of the phone that I received is KB2007 and the only 8T models they will allow are KB2000, KB2001, & KB2005.
