Have you tried soaking them?
Soaking reduces the heat of your smoker and IMO causes the chips to put off a bad flavor. I only replace chips 2-3
times during smoking so cost is negligible anyway.

If you can get a hold of it you should try apple and cottonwood
I've never seen cottonwood. I've never heard it mentioned in any of the smoking forums. What kind of smoke does it impart on the meat?

That's because it's so mild, it's only good for fish.

I think $2.30 is not bad and have it now as I grill during the winter. I paid $2.80 for the Apple smoking chips back in July and $1.88 a bag for the Hickory chips 2 years (this is the lowest I have seen and bought 5).

Really light smoke. Helps stretch out the use of all your fruit wood. Also if you can get a hold of it try orange and lemon wood. I'm in Arizona so we have some of the more creative smoking woods here. but mostly mesquite

For those saying why chips vs lumps... Lumps you usually burn with your coals. Lumps become it's own heat source so you have to account for that. Chips are mostly used as a method for milder smoke penetration. They burn faster obviously, but they also fit into electric smokers and smoke trays better. I'll usually use chips in a smoke tube just off the side so that grilled foods have a bit of smoke flavor.

Thanks, In for 4! I use chips in a V shaped stainless steel smoker box in my gas grill. Soak them first. Works very well.

It's even cheaper now, $1.97 and delivery is 12/29.

It was at $1.97 this morning at 8am but the price has jumped 6 hours later to $6.59.
