Would have been nice to get a bit more heads up, rather than days before the expiration. Not the OP's fault, just in general. So now there will be a rush of people trying to get in before the deadline.

Question - If a child gets a passport at age 15, is that good for 5 years or do they need to get an adult one at age 16? Discount for upgrading to the adult since the full 5 years hasn't passed? Adult ones are 10 years I believe.

If they get it even a day before their 16th birthday, it's a 5 year passport and they need to renew in 5 years. There's no conversion or discount AFAIK for moving to a 10 year when they become 16.

I recall being miffed about that when we renewed for my 15 year old, but we needed the passport to travel so nothing we can do.

This is patently not true for every state. Getting a realID drivers license is simple in many states. All it takes is gathering a few documents and some mail. The only caveat is that you need to get the initial realid in person. I have been able to do renewals of the realid the same way I always did renewals on my regular drivers license.
