This works, but ymmv depending on the person doing the printing. Some employees are very strict and won't give it to you due to policy and trying to skip their passport fee.

I just go to walmart let them charge me $7 for the passport photo to skip the hassle since their fee is somewhat reasonable.

I just redid my passport (just came in the mail in the past month) and usually get the passport card since I live so close to Canada, it's more convenient than bringing a passport. I didn't realize it was REALID though (I'm not disagreeing, I just hadn't realized) as it's normally just land and sea entry for countries in North America (I only use it for Canada). It'll be nice to have an extra ID in case I've misplaced something next time I fly domestically.

My last driver's license renewal I got the REALID and it was not a problem to get. I probably took my passport and maybe my birth certificate and was in and out.

EDIT: Was thinking about this more: Looking back at my application form, I don't see anything about using the card for domestic flights only land/sea (but my card does say I can). I wonder how recent this is.
