NJ renew drivers license online.

How do they test your eyes, then? No eye test for renewing driver's license? How about photo?

Oh, wow. No eye test! I wear glasses and get so nervous every time I had to take eye test for driver's license renewals. I always think I would fail it.

So, you can forever be 29 on your driver's license!?

You can get those for free. Do something to get arrested, they'll give you free photos.

Amazing, the government can print out $1.7 trillion for handouts to the well-connected but needs to increase the price of a passport by $20 for the average person.

Every state is going to be different... Generally, you apply to renew online and it'll ask you a series of questions. If one of your answers trigger a mandatory in-person renewal, then you can't renew online.

So it'll ask you about your eyesight. If you already have the corrective lens restriction, it'll ask something about if you can still drive fine or need special assistance (this will trigger ineligibility). I imagine if you try to get rid of the restriction (like you got laser surgery) then that'll trigger an in-person test and you wouldn't be able to renew online.

Not all states make you even do a vision test on renewal if you are under a certain age. So they could just code that in to make you ineligible for online renewal....not sure if they do that though.

Dunno if online renewal has even been around for 8 to 16+ years to see if you can keep the same pic more than once. But you could easily code that in to make a person ineligible. I don't think all states even make you retake a pic for renewals in-person, every time (probably rules on that).

I have to get a photo taken every time I need to renew my driver's license in Indiana. And every photo is worse than the previous one. I think "oh, wow. No photos gonna top this one.", then boom, next renewal photo is worse. Luckily me, this year's license photo is fuzzy looking on the actual license, compared to the temporary printout license they gave me (back and white photo).

One tip that might help some save money...

If you want a passport only because of its ID powers, not travel...

Or, if you have an expired passport now, and don't plan on foreign travel until 5 or 6 years from now...

Instead of buying a full passport, buy a passport card and use it as a placeholder for up to the next 15 years, then if you need a full passport later, you can use the passport card to do a simple renew/upgrade rather than applying anew with full original doc requirements.

But if you need a full passport soon, buy a full poassport right now to save the $20.

I just looked it up. Looks like the card is valid for 10 years, not 15.

"The passport card has the same validity as the passport book: If you're over 16, your passport card is valid for 10 years. If you're under 16, your passport card is valid for 5 years."

It's already on your driver license. If wear glasses, then it's on it. Why test again? If you have lasik, then you need to go to the dmv to test it.
